The Queen Mother of the Mepe Traditional Area, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV, issued a formal appeal to the government, demanding immediate action to rectify the significant losses experienced by those affected. Speaking in an interview with Adom News Correspondent Odehyeba Owusu Job during the 70th celebration of the Mepe Afenotor Festival by the chiefs and people of Mepe, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV stated that no residents had yet received full compensation for the extensive damage sustained during the disaster. The Queen Mother emphasized the urgent need for the government to complete projects designed to provide shelter for those displaced, while simultaneously offering financial assistance to those whose livelihoods were destroyed. She acknowledged efforts by previous and current governments to establish housing and other interventions, but stressed the importance of these initiatives being completed without further delay. The Queen Mother further highlighted the need to reconstruct all internal roads within Mepe as a crucial component of the compensation package, aiming to alleviate the community’s immediate hardship. She also pleaded for a temporary waiver of electricity bills for residents, arguing that the prolonged disruption caused by the floods has severely impacted their daily lives. The Queen Mother expressed deep concern over the years of delayed access to electricity that the community has endured since the construction of the Akosombo Dam, noting that it took several years for Mepe to establish a reliable electricity supply. She asserted that residents are entitled to fair compensation for their losses and that the government must prioritize the restoration of essential infrastructure to ensure the community’s well-being. The Queen Mother called on the people of Mepe to remain united and continue engaging with the government and relevant authorities to address the outstanding needs of the community following this catastrophic event.
