UEFA, the governing body of football’s top leagues across Europe and beyond, has issued a formal condemnation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, alleging a pattern of deception in a joint statement with the Asian and North and Central American football federations. The statement, released Monday, marks a significant escalation in a long-standing dispute over the proposed sale of a £3.1 billion stake in the World Cup commercial rights, sparking intense scrutiny and calls for a full review.

The joint declaration, spearheaded by the AFC and CONCACAF, centers on Infantino’s alleged actions during the sale process. The AFC and CONCACAF, which represents football across the Caribbean, North and Central America, teamed up with UEFA on Monday to accuse Infantino over his conduct during the proposed sale, specifically regarding trust, placement of himself above the collective, and the three confederations’ demand for a fully independent audit.

The statement asserted that Infantino had ‘deceived’ the now-abandoned sale proposal through ‘misleading’ behavior, placing himself above the collective and the three confederations called for a ‘fully independent review.’ FIFA released a statement on Saturday criticizing a ‘concerted and ongoing effort’ to undermine both the organization and Infantino.

UEFA announced on Thursday that they would continue to boycott FIFA competitions if Infantino remains at the top of the world football landscape following his scandalous plans to sell the World Cup stakes. Meanwhile, Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) President Lise Klaveness called for his resignation on Friday, highlighting the growing discontent within the football community.

UEFA (president Aleksander Ceferin, left) has directly accused FIFA President Gianni Infantino (right) of deception in the joint statement, reinforcing the accusations that the now-former FIFA president was acting with deceit.

The allegation centers on a supposed departure payment to a female employee, which FIFA labelled ‘categorically untrue.’ However, the accusation has ignited a fierce debate, with FIFA attempting to downplay it, suggesting it was a procedural error rather than a deliberate attempt to undermine the process.

As it stands, despite UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF’s joint statement, the FIFA president still appears to have enough support to survive a vote of no confidence and secure a fourth term in next March’s election. Infantino has also faced allegations this week that UEFA made a ‘departure payment’ to a female employee with whom he is alleged to have been in a relationship while general secretary of European football’s governing body.

UEFA has confirmed a payment was made, but FIFA labelled the allegation as ‘categorically untrue’.

Infantino has also faced allegations this week that UEFA made a ‘departure payment’ to a female employee with whom he is alleged to have been in a relationship while general secretary of European football’s governing body.

This situation is triggering widespread concern within the football world, with fans, players, and industry stakeholders expressing outrage and demanding transparency. The situation has underscored the fragility of trust within FIFA and the potential for strategic maneuvering to undermine the integrity of the sport. The controversy has also raised questions about the role of individual executives within FIFA, particularly regarding the potential for conflicts of interest and the influence of personal relationships.

Furthermore, the statement highlights the increasing pressure on FIFA to address the concerns raised by the confederations, who have repeatedly called for greater consultation and oversight during the World Cup planning process. The controversy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing FIFA in maintaining public trust and ensuring the long-term stability of the governing body.
