Finance Minister and outgoing Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has completed his final official engagements as Acting Minister for Defence, culminating in the commissioning of the Butler Barracks accommodation and office complex. This significant step marks a substantial investment by the government in the welfare and operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces, reaffirming a commitment to improving the infrastructure and support for military personnel. The project, one of Dr. Forson’s final official duties, sees the opening of new facilities for the Central Ordnance Depot, the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band, and the Armed Forces Music School.
The ceremony was attended by key officials from the Ministry of Defence, including the Director-General of the Central Ordnance Depot, and representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band and Music School.
Dr. Forson highlighted the importance of the project, stating that while the government cannot meet every infrastructure requirement, strengthening partnerships with the private sector is crucial for accelerating the delivery of vital defence infrastructure. He emphasized that the Butler Barracks complex provides modern accommodation, administrative offices, classrooms, rehearsal halls, and welfare facilities designed to enhance operational efficiency and the quality of life for personnel.
The commissioning of the new Music Hall and Auditorium for the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band was particularly noted, with Dr. Forson describing it as a fitting tribute to the Band’s crucial role in preserving military traditions, promoting national pride, and supporting national ceremonies. He stressed that the government intends to continue pursuing innovative and sustainable approaches to infrastructure development across the Armed Forces, prioritizing the completion of critical and ongoing projects.
Dr. Forson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the Afari Military Hospital, a significant undertaking that underscores the government’s dedication to the well-being of its armed forces. He commended the Military High Command, the Ministry of Defence, Messrs Unique Development Limited, and all individuals involved in the project’s successful execution. The outgoing Acting Defence Minister urged personnel utilizing the facilities to adopt a strong maintenance culture to ensure the infrastructure’s longevity for future generations.
This decision comes as Dr. Forson wraps up his responsibilities at the Ministry of Defence after serving as Acting Minister alongside his substantive role as Minister for Finance for a year. The NPP is urging Mahama to return Cocoa Board Bill to Parliament for consideration.
He stressed that the facilities represent a valuable national investment and must be properly maintained to ensure they continue to serve the Ghana Armed Forces for many years. The ceremony underscores the government’s strategic prioritization of bolstering the military’s capabilities, reflecting a dedication to national security and military readiness.
