The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that two people died in a multiple-vehicle crash and fire which occurred on the Accra-Kumasi Highway on Monday. This tragic incident, which unfolded near the Birimso Bridge section of the N6 Highway, has sent shockwaves through the region, leaving a community grappling with grief and uncertainty. The GNFS received a distress call at 11:00 a.m. and responded within three minutes, swiftly extinguishing the blaze that followed the collision.

The crash involved a fuel tanker, an STC bus, a Mitsubishi pick-up with registration number GE 8602-17, and a Kia Sorento saloon car with registration number GT 8601-14. The STC bus, carrying passengers to Accra, was identified as the primary vehicle involved in the accident. The fuel tanker, a substantial volume of fuel, was completely destroyed by the fire, while the Mitsubishi pick-up, potentially carrying cargo, sustained significant damage. The Kia Sorento, a passenger vehicle, suffered extensive damage to its roof and doors.

The two deceased were both occupants of the tanker. Their bodies were immediately identified as belonging to individuals identified through forensic examination and subsequent DNA analysis. The bodies were handed over to the police for identification purposes, a process which is currently ongoing. The investigation into the cause of the crash and fire is underway, with initial indications pointing to a possible mechanical failure exacerbated by the challenging road conditions. The GNFS stated that the accident occurred at a point where visibility was significantly reduced due to heavy rain and fog, contributing to the hazardous driving conditions.

The crash resulted in heavy traffic on both lanes of the highway, causing significant delays for motorists traveling towards Accra. AdomoOnline reported that this disruption has led to a significant shift in traffic patterns, with a considerable number of vehicles being diverted through Kibi at Nsutam, and a parallel flow of traffic towards Kumasi, utilizing the Apedwa route. Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the day, meticulously extinguishing the blaze and clearing debris to restore normal traffic flow. While the precise cause of the collision remains under investigation, preliminary reports suggest a potential malfunction in the tanker’s brakes, raising concerns about potential safety risks. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and to adhere to speed limits, given the challenging road conditions.

Six other victims, four men and two women, were rescued from the scene and transported to Hawa Memorial Hospital for medical attention. The extent of the injuries sustained by the victims is currently unknown. The GNFS has confirmed that a thorough investigation will be conducted, involving experts in fire investigation and accident reconstruction, to determine the full circumstances of the incident and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The investigation is being supported by a team of specialized officers and forensic analysts.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ghana’s transportation infrastructure, particularly in the region, and underscores the critical importance of robust safety measures and regular maintenance to protect lives and minimize disruptions to traffic. The road authorities are reviewing safety protocols to better address these potential risks. The recovery of the vehicles involved is currently underway, and authorities are working to determine if any of the vehicles were involved in a commercial operation. The GNFS is committed to providing updates as the investigation progresses.

These are two individuals tragically lost, and their families are grieving. The community is deeply affected by this devastating event. The GNFS is working closely with the police and other agencies to ensure a swift and comprehensive investigation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of hazardous driving conditions and the importance of prioritizing safety on our roads. The investigation is focused on establishing a clear timeline of events and identifying any contributing factors to the accident. The road authorities are reviewing their safety protocols and implementing measures to mitigate future risks. The GNFS is prioritizing the safety of all road users, and this incident reinforces their commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system for the nation.
