The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has initiated a major investigation following the arrest of ten individuals on Friday night during an intelligence-led operation at the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Week celebrations at the Koforidua Technical University (KTU). The operation, which followed reports of suspected drug-related activities on campus, has resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of cannabis and cannabis-infused products, fueling concerns about potential distribution within the university community.

The investigation, spearheaded by NACOC’s intelligence unit, began following a series of credible reports circulating amongst security personnel and university staff. These reports detailed observations of individuals potentially engaging in the distribution of cannabis and other cannabis-related substances, prompting a proactive investigation. The operation’s scope was expanded following a confirmed seizure of suspected cannabis and various consumable products believed to have been infused with the narcotic.

According to a statement released by NACOC, the arrest occurred during a nighttime operation conducted on Friday night. The team of investigators, comprised of officers and specialists, utilized surveillance and other intelligence gathering techniques to identify and locate potential suspects. The seizure of the contraband involved a range of items, including wraps of suspected cannabis, cups of what appears to be ‘abele’ ice cream, bottles of pineapple juice, sobolo drinks, fresh palm wine, and other beverages – all of which are considered to be associated with cannabis consumption.

“This incident underscores the seriousness with which the NACOC is taking the potential for illicit drug activity within our educational institutions,” stated a spokesperson for the commission. “We are committed to protecting the integrity of KTU’s SRC Week celebrations and the surrounding environment. The suspected distribution of cannabis represents a potential risk to the university community and the wider public.”

The ten individuals apprehended are currently assisting in the ongoing investigation, which involves a thorough review of their backgrounds, movements, and potential connections to known drug networks. NACOC is working to determine the full extent of the alleged operation, including identifying any other individuals involved and assessing the potential impact on the university’s student body.

Furthermore, the Commission emphasized the importance of vigilance among students and members of the public. “We urge everyone to remain aware of suspicious activities and to report any potential violations to the appropriate authorities immediately,” the spokesperson asserted. “The NACOC is dedicated to upholding the law and ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all.”

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are exploring all available avenues to investigate the matter thoroughly. NACOC has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and will take appropriate action should further evidence emerge.

The precise quantity of cannabis seized remains undisclosed, but authorities have indicated that the operation suggests a substantial level of distribution within the university vicinity. This incident highlights a growing concern among authorities regarding the potential for cannabis use and distribution to escalate, potentially impacting student well-being and academic performance.”

The findings of the investigation are expected to be released in the coming days, and NACOC will provide further updates as they become available. The Commission has reiterated its stance on combating drug-related activities and its dedication to maintaining a safe and productive educational environment.
