The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has initiated a significant operation in Koforidua, targeting ten individuals suspected of distributing cannabis and cannabis-infused drinks during the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) SRC Week celebrations. This arrest comes following an intelligence-led operation conducted by NACOC officers, who identified patterns of suspected drug-related activities on the university campus. The operation, initiated on Friday night, resulted in the apprehension of nine males and one female, a total of ten suspects.

The suspects, initially apprehended following a meticulous intelligence gathering process, were seized following an operation that utilized a combination of surveillance and targeted questioning. NACOC officers, comprised of specialized personnel, conducted a thorough sweep of the university grounds and surrounding areas, uncovering evidence of potential cannabis distribution. The investigation, led by NACOC, began with the collection of information regarding suspected drug-related activities, a process that involved monitoring online forums and social media channels.

The seized items include a significant quantity of suspected cannabis, wrapped in various forms, and several consumable products believed to have been infused with the narcotic. Specifically, the authorities recovered wraps of suspected cannabis, cups of what appears to be ‘abele’ ice cream, bottles of pineapple juice, sobolo drinks, fresh palm wine, and other beverages. These items were seized during a rigorous forensic examination conducted by NACOC’s forensic teams.

Preliminary field tests conducted on the seized cannabis confirmed the presence of the substance, immediately raising serious concerns about potential distribution to students and other participants during the SRC Week festivities. NACOC officials stated that the investigation is ongoing, with the aim of determining the full extent of the alleged operation and identifying any additional individuals involved. The Commission is actively working to determine the scope of this activity and is cooperating with prosecutors to pursue justice, emphasizing that the focus is not solely on convictions but on ensuring the prevention of drug-related activities.

The operation has been prompted by a heightened concern within the Koforidua community regarding potential drug misuse on the university campus. NACOC has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students and members of the public, urging individuals to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities, including university security personnel and law enforcement agencies.

Inusah Fuseini, a prominent prosecutor, has voiced his concern regarding the potential impact of the arrests on the university’s operations. He has stated, “The government must review the October deadline for new initiatives to address this issue, ensuring adequate resources are allocated to protect our students and maintain the integrity of our academic institutions.”

The investigation is being coordinated by NACOC, with assistance from local law enforcement agencies. The Commission is committed to upholding its mandate to prevent drug-related activities and will continue to monitor the situation closely. The authorities are actively investigating the origins and distribution network of these seized items, which could have significant ramifications for the university community and beyond. The focus is on identifying the individuals involved and preventing further potential distribution of cannabis.

Further details regarding the investigation and the impact on the university’s operations will be released as they become available. The Commission is working to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation to address the concerns raised and to prevent any further harm to the community.
