Australia’s government continues to grapple with the lingering effects of its landmark ban on social media platforms for under-16s, with a significant and persistent challenge remaining: the continued use of these platforms by a substantial portion of the teenage population. A recent report by eSafety, Australia’s internet regulator, reveals that over eight in ten Australians are still actively engaging with social media, despite the implementation of the ban three months prior to its effective date on December 10th. This figure represents a stark contrast to the initial projections of a rapid decline in usage, which was anticipated to be substantial. The report, published on Friday, details a comprehensive analysis of social media usage patterns across the country, focusing on the period following the ban’s commencement. Specifically, a study examining data from March to November of this year found that the majority of children aged between 10 and 15 were continuing to use social media platforms just as frequently as they had before the ban’s introduction, demonstrating a continued reliance on these platforms. Furthermore, parental awareness of children’s online habits has demonstrably decreased, according to eSafety’s findings, suggesting a shift in how parents are approaching monitoring their children’s digital activity. The report highlights that approximately 58 percent of teenagers reported using social media daily, a figure that remains above 81 percent – a notable increase from the initial 86 percent recorded in the survey conducted three months prior to the ban’s enforcement. The data also reveals a concerning trend: nearly half of the children surveyed retained their accounts, with a significant number of these accounts being left active without any age verification measures in place. A substantial 58 percent of teenagers reported using social media daily, a figure that remains above 60 percent before the ban, indicating a continued reliance on these platforms. The report meticulously examines various facets of teenage life, including sports, physical activity, arts and music, spending time with friends and family, and attendance at community events. It finds that these activities remain largely unaffected by the ban’s impact, suggesting a continued engagement with traditional forms of social interaction. The government has consistently defended its ban, arguing that it had already fundamentally reshaped the national debate and that the ban has been instrumental in establishing a crucial game changer among parents. In a televised address on Saturday, Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury, Andrew Leigh stated that the ban had “already reshaped the national debate.” He emphasized that the ban had “already been an important game changer in the conversation among parents.” Leigh further asserted that the government had been expecting a 100 percent compliance rate, noting that they had never anticipated a level of 100 percent compliance out of minimum drinking age laws. The report’s findings underscore the enduring influence of social media on Australian youth, highlighting a continued reliance on these platforms despite the government’s efforts to curb their use.
