A partnership behind some of the most recognizable records of the last three decades is now tangled in a far less glamorous question of who can identify exactly what they created. Chad Hugo continues pursuing Pharrell Williams over money and ownership tied to their years together in The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. Pharrell’s attorneys are challenging whether Hugo has been specific enough about the music he says belongs partly to him.

In an Oct. 6 filing, Pharrell asked the court to dismiss Hugo’s lawsuit, arguing that its copyright claims remain too vague to answer. His attorney Edwin F. McPherson put the criticism more sharply. “As incomprehensible as it is, it appears that Hugo has no idea which compositions or sound recordings he supposedly authored, even though he claims to have been there, right by defendants’ side, the whole time,” he wrote, according to AllHipHop.

The dispute is partly about how Hugo’s claims have changed as the case has progressed. An earlier version of his complaint identified eight songs, but he removed those titles from his latest filing. According to Rolling Stone, the current complaint specifically names EarthGang’s “U Gotta,” though Pharrell’s attorneys argue it still does not make clear whether Hugo is claiming an interest in the composition, the sound recording, or both.

Hugo initially sued in January, accusing Pharrell of withholding earnings and failing to provide adequate access to financial records connected to The Neptunes and N.E.R.D. He has alleged that money owed from N.E.R.D.’s 2017 album No One Ever Really Dies alone could exceed $1 million. The complaint also describes Hugo as a central creative force in the partnership, saying he worked as a writer, producer, arranger and performer while contributing to the sound that made both groups commercially valuable.

That description is what makes Pharrell’s latest argument especially pointed. In an earlier filing, Hugo characterized himself as the “principal composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and producer responsible for programming, instrumentation, and overall sound design,” while describing Pharrell as the more publicly visible member of the duo. Pharrell’s side is now effectively arguing that someone making such a broad claim about his creative role should also be able to identify the individual works and rights at issue.

The disagreement is only one front in the deterioration of a partnership that had already spilled into a separate trademark fight over The Neptunes name in 2024. Hugo accused Pharrell of trying to secure control of the mark through his own company, while Pharrell’s camp said the intention was to protect the name and share ownership with Hugo. After decades of shared credits, the lawsuit is forcing both men to define ownership with a precision their partnership never required.
