Ghana Education Service (GES) Director-General Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis has called for a renegotiation of the teacher strike by three unions – Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) – aiming to resolve outstanding issues concerning promotion and arrears. Prof. Davis stated that the GES is engaging with the Ministry of Education and other government officials in discussions with the unions to address these concerns while prioritizing the continuation of teaching and learning. Following a meeting, the unions reiterated their demand for immediate action, highlighting that promises made previously have not been fulfilled. The government’s focus on teacher development and career progression is a key point of their argument, and the GES has expanded opportunities for teachers to rise through the ranks, increasing the number of Director-1 positions by over 1,500 percent. The GES Director-General emphasized that the decision to engage with the unions was driven by a desire to find solutions while adhering to government priorities. The GES is working with the Ministry of Education and crucial institutions to address concerns and ensured students returned to schools in September. He also acknowledged the union’s concerns, highlighting the need to minimize disruption. Furthermore, the GES urged teachers to reconsider the strike and return to classrooms.
