Following his UN speech, Lavrov stated that he had received no new insights from the German counterpart, suggesting a continuation of the previous discussions.
The ministers also addressed concerns about bilateral ties and the war in Ukraine, with Wadephul emphasizing Germany’s position on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and a call for an immediate ceasefire, with a focus on grain exports and energy infrastructure. Kyiv has expressed its openness to agreements and has condemned the war as a violation of international law. Wadephul subsequently notified his European allies of the meeting following the discussion, reiterating Germany’s stance on Russia’s war of aggression and a demand for a ceasefire.
The meeting occurred amidst a broader diplomatic effort to attempt to revitalize Russia and Ukraine’s Black Sea grain and energy exports, which have been restricted by attacks on vessels and port infrastructure. Lavrov’s statement indicated that Russia had been engaged in talks with India, Egypt, and Turkey regarding the safe navigation of the Black Sea, suggesting a desire for alternative solutions to the challenges facing the region.
