Iran has asserted its intention to await a formal response from US negotiators following President Donald Trump’s unequivocal rejection of a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within seven days, a move that has intensified existing geopolitical tensions.

In a post on Telegram, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi acknowledged Trump’s stance, but accused the president of previously making contradictory statements, suggesting a potential for miscommunication and strategic maneuvering.

Earlier, Trump stated during a White House briefing that Tehran’s proposal was ‘not acceptable’ and expressed a desire to initiate immediate negotiations to unlock the strait, citing concerns about ‘significant losses’ for Iran. This declaration, repeated in various interviews, has been interpreted by some as a deliberate attempt to leverage the situation for political advantage.

On Friday, Araghchi conveyed that an agreement could be reached if ‘necessary conditions are met’ between the two countries, referencing a memorandum of understanding signed in June that outlines the framework for future negotiations. The memorandum details the same conditions that had been included in a previous agreement between the US and Iran, establishing a basis for potential resumption of trade.

Iran has repeatedly highlighted the vital role of the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a crucial artery for approximately a fifth of global oil and gas exports. Since the outbreak of war in February, the waterway has been effectively closed, disrupting global supply chains and raising concerns about energy security.

Following Trump’s rejection, Oman, acting as a mediator, called for all parties to continue open dialogue to address the crisis. Oman’s foreign minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, emphasized the need for cooperation between all involved to safeguard navigation in the strategic waterway. The UN General Debate saw Turkey, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates halt flights from various Iranian airlines and banks with significant ties to Iran, demonstrating the economic impact of the sanctions.

The US ambassador to Nato, Matthew Whitaker, stated on Saturday that Iran had offered ‘half measures’ and ‘illusory deals’ to make themselves appear beneficial on the world stage, suggesting a calculated strategy to mitigate the negative effects of the economic pressure.

Trump’s rejection of Iran’s proposal was met with a significant response from the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) stating that Turkey, Oman, and the UAE had halted flights from Iranian airlines and some banks in the UAE and Turkey, signifying a tangible impact on Iran’s economy. Economists are questioning whether the sanctions, implemented in response to Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile tests, will prove effective, given the continued support from China, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, which has largely ignored previous US sanctions and continues to trade with Tehran.

Further complicating matters, the Trump administration has dubbed the economic blockade on Iran as ‘Operation Economic Outcast’, utilizing sanctions to exert pressure on Tehran to halt attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The situation remains highly volatile, with potential ramifications for global energy markets and geopolitical stability.
