The Electoral Commission (EC) in the Eastern Region has issued a serious warning to Ghanaians against the escalating influence of money and bribery within the country’s democratic processes, delivered by Edward Gyamfi, Deputy Director. His concerns stem from a growing apprehension that these practices are eroding the integrity of the electoral system and posing significant risks to Ghana’s future.

Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that while money undeniably plays a vital role in society, the utilization of it to unduly influence voter behavior could severely compromise the foundation of Ghana’s democracy. He stressed that the Constitution of Ghana, as enshrined in Article 46, guarantees the independence of the Electoral Commission, allowing it to fulfill its essential functions without undue interference.

Speaking at Adom Brands’ public dialogue, titled ‘Democracy Is Not For Sale,’ Mr. Gyamfi highlighted the importance of adhering to established laws governing electoral processes. He stated unequivocally that the law dictates the roles and responsibilities of institutions and citizens, urging all stakeholders – including political leaders, election officials, and the public – to uphold these legal frameworks. ‘We have the laws; it is up to us to use honesty and work with the laws,’ he asserted, referencing the Constitution’s guarantee of transparency and accountability.

Mr. Gyamfi pointed to the practice of using financial inducements to sway voters, a phenomenon he described as ‘disturbing’ and ‘filtering down to the younger generation.’ He illustrated this by referencing instances where children, even in primary schools, have been offered gifts and incentives to vote for specific candidates, a situation he views as a grave concern. He underscored the need for immediate action to mitigate this trend, stating that ‘we need to take a critical look at it and fix it before it gets out of hand.’

He urged Ghanaians to prioritize protecting the country’s democratic gains by resisting the temptation of monetary inducements and focusing instead on the competence and integrity of candidates during elections. He specifically cautioned against allowing financial incentives to undermine the credibility of electoral outcomes. Specifically, he urged a shift away from relying on gifts and incentives to determine election results, advocating instead for a system based on verifiable qualifications and demonstrated competence.

Mr. Gyamfi reiterated the crucial role of electoral laws in maintaining the integrity of the election process and stressed that the focus should remain on the selection of candidates rather than monetary inducements. The forum is being held at the Ascension Hall in Koforidua, organized by Adom Brands in partnership with JoyNews Impact Makers Foundation. Livestream: ‘Democracy Is Not For Sale’ forum opens today, highlighting the urgent need to address this growing challenge to the stability of Ghana’s democratic system.

He concluded by stating that the future of Ghana’s democracy rests on the commitment of all stakeholders to protect the country’s gains through vigilance and adherence to established electoral procedures.
