Mr. Adzovie emphasized that the fundamental principle of democracy lies in empowering citizens to elect leaders capable of improving society. He stated, ‘The essence of democracy is to allow individuals to be elected, and there are certain qualities we need in that person to make our society better. That’s where our democracy comes in,’ highlighting the importance of the electorate’s role in selecting leaders.
His critique extended beyond mere political maneuvering, focusing on the danger of allowing monetary incentives to unduly influence electoral choices. He cautioned that such practices could lead to the election of individuals lacking the necessary capabilities to effectively serve the public interest. He articulated a critical point: ‘Meaning that we don’t have to pick just anyone. But if we don’t look for those qualities and get lured by money, that is the mistake we are doing in our politics now.’
He further referenced the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, stating, ‘Our Constitution clearly states the criteria for who should be voted for, and that is what we need to be doing.’ This reference underscores the foundational legal framework underpinning Ghana’s democratic system. The 1992 Constitution establishes the framework for participation and election, solidifying the principle that leadership should be based on qualifications and abilities.
Furthermore, Adzovie stressed the need for voters to assess candidates based on their leadership abilities and potential contribution to national development, rather than solely focusing on financial offers. According to Adzovie, the best approach is to find someone who possesses leadership qualities that can help all of us. He underscored that the focus should be on identifying someone who can lead and provide effective governance.
