The husband of a 31-year-old woman, Theresa Boakye Dua, has filed a formal complaint with the Ghana Health Service alleging negligence at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge Hospital, following her death following a C-section on August 28, 2026. Daniel Ofori Asante, the husband, claims that the hospital and its medical personnel failed to provide adequate care and contributed to the tragic event. The couple had been married for 19 months, and Mr. Asante stated that the Caesarean section was Theresa’s first attempt at childbirth, a detail he emphasizes as a pivotal moment in their relationship. He alleges that the circumstances surrounding her death involved ‘blatant negligence and unprofessionalism,’ though he did not provide specific details of the alleged errors. The allegations stem from a Facebook post on August 28, 2026, where he expressed his profound grief and frustration at his wife’s passing. According to Mr. Asante, the hospital’s delayed response to his concerns, coupled with a lack of transparency regarding the medical procedures, significantly exacerbated the situation. He describes the event as a devastating loss for his family, particularly his son, who will be left without his mother. The allegations, made since the evening of July 16, 2026, involve a significant emotional distress and a growing determination to uncover the full details of the incident. He asserted that the hospital’s actions, if proven, could have preventable tragedies for other pregnant women. Mr. Asante also indicated that the incident had impacted his father, who had been living outside Ghana and was expected to return in 2027, yet had to return earlier due to his daughter’s death. He expressed deep concern for the medical team involved, accusing unnamed individuals at Ridge Hospital of prioritizing expediency over patient safety and meticulous observation. The allegations were made public in a Facebook post where he detailed his struggle to come to terms with the loss and his intention to pursue further investigations. He further detailed his feelings about the lack of accountability and the potential for repeated failures in maternal healthcare in Ghana, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of the events leading to his wife’s death. The Ghana Health Service, in response to Mr. Asante’s complaint, has not yet publicly released an official statement. Prior to this, the service reported a slight increase in maternal mortality rates in Ghana, rising from 109.22 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023 to 110 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2024. The service also noted a decline in skilled delivery coverage, with 60.6% of women receiving skilled delivery coverage in 2023 compared to 55% in 2024. The current maternal mortality rate is significantly higher than the Sustainable Development Goal target of fewer than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. The case highlights the ongoing concern regarding maternal mortality and the need for increased accountability within healthcare facilities. The family seeks answers about the medical decisions made during Theresa’s C-section, and Mr. Asante intends to continue his investigation, highlighting the potential for further investigations into negligence and medical errors. The full extent of his claims, including specific details of the alleged errors, remains largely undisclosed. The incident has also drawn attention to the need for improved oversight and transparency in the healthcare system, particularly within the Ridge Hospital context, and the need for investigations to determine the root cause of the observed increase in maternal mortality. The family’s actions reflect a desperate search for answers and a commitment to honoring their wife’s memory.”], , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
