The Right to Information Commission (RTI Commission) has formally announced September 2026 as its designated ‘Right to Information Month’ – a significant initiative designed to bolster public awareness and ensure the effective implementation of the 2019 Right to Information Act, 989. This month-long commemoration will be a crucial element in reinforcing transparency and accountability across Ghana’s digital landscape. The Commission’s statement, signed by Executive Secretary Genevieve Shirley Lartey, Esq, on August 27, 2026, emphasizes the month’s focus on understanding the fundamental importance of access to information for societal well-being. The theme, ‘Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder,’ underscores this vital point.
The Commission’s program will encompass a multifaceted approach, beginning with a series of public outreach activities. Specifically, a 14-day radio and television interview program, scheduled from September 1st to 28th, will feature officials of the RTI Commission, engaging with a diverse range of media outlets across Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga. These interviews are intended to educate the public on the provisions of Act 989 and clarify the responsibilities of both public institutions and citizens under the law.
Furthermore, the Commission is planning a series of media engagements, including scheduled conferences. A stakeholder conference will be held on September 24th, bringing together representatives from ministries, departments, and agencies, metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies, civil society organizations, the media, academia, traditional authorities, and development partners. The conference’s primary objective is to develop practical recommendations for addressing information disorder and promoting meaningful public participation in decision-making processes. The Commission will also dedicate time to internal staff engagement and team-building activities, culminating in an RTIC Staff Fun Day.
As part of this initiative, the Commission has emphasized the need for public institutions to strengthen their proactive disclosure practices and fully comply with their obligations under Act 989. The Commission further urged the media and civil society organizations to continue promoting access to information and disseminating accurate and verified information. Citizens are encouraged to exercise their right to information responsibly, relying on credible sources and contributing to a well-informed and resilient society.
