The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has issued a serious warning regarding the escalating reliance of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, on employment opportunities for young people across the country. The conference’s statement underscores a troubling trend that threatens the country’s natural resources and poses significant risks to communities and the environment.

For decades, galamsey has been a persistent challenge, and the Bishops’ Conference is increasingly concerned about its growing influence as a primary source of employment, particularly amongst young people. This practice, characterized by unregulated and often dangerous extraction, continues to inflict devastating consequences on the environment and the lives of those affected.

The Bishops’ Conference has formally voiced its apprehension regarding alleged involvement by some politicians, Members of Parliament, Municipal and District Chief Executives, and traditional leaders in the illegal mining sector. This alleged collusion undermines efforts to address the complex issue of galamsey and its detrimental impact on the nation’s natural heritage.

President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi, addressed Parliament’s Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs, emphasizing the urgent need for decisive action. He unequivocally stated that illegal mining remains ongoing, unfortunately, sadly, dangerously. The situation presents a significant threat to the country’s ecological stability.

“Illegal mining is still ongoing, unfortunately, sadly, dangerously,” he said, adding that the issue is being treated as a formal means of providing employment, a perspective that, according to the Bishops, is ultimately a losing battle for the country. He highlighted that the economic benefits derived from this practice far outweigh any perceived gains, a point he emphasized with considerable seriousness.

Furthermore, the Bishops’ Conference has received a letter from an MP who reportedly engaged in a dispute with an MCE over illegal mining, illustrating a troubling escalation of the problem. This incident suggests a growing pattern of mismanagement and a lack of effective oversight, raising concerns about the scale of the issue.

Most Rev. Gyamfi cautioned that the situation has reached a point where illegal mining is being treated as a formalized method of employment, potentially leading to a significant loss of more than what is gained. He explained that the cost-benefit analysis reveals that the country is, in essence, facing a losing battle, highlighting the profound environmental and social ramifications of this continued practice.

The conference is calling for a swift and comprehensive response to tackle this issue, advocating for a fundamental shift in policy and enforcement to curb illegal mining and protect the environment and communities affected. The long-term consequences of inaction are deeply worrying, and the Bishops’ Conference is determined to ensure that the country’s natural resources are safeguarded for future generations.

Several reports indicate that the number of young people engaged in galamsey is significantly increasing, further exacerbating the challenges and potentially leading to unsustainable practices. The situation demands a serious and sustained commitment to safeguarding the country’s natural resources and the well-being of its youth. The full impact of this trend remains to be fully understood, but the implications are undeniably serious.
