The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) has announced a significant move to remove Gianni Infantino as FIFA president, a move that will likely continue the existing boycott of FIFA competitions. The 55-member associations, including Europe’s members on the FIFA Council, will be presented with a letter guaranteeing the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan will not be revived. This action follows a vote by the FIFA Council, which is expected to be finalized at the executive committee meeting in Monaco. The Ufc’s official confirmation of this removal is anticipated to be made at this meeting, signifying a potential resolution to Uefa’s demands and a potential alleviation of concerns regarding the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup’s upcoming participation in Poland. The FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup is scheduled to proceed with six European teams, a development that is expected to generate significant discussion within the football community. BBC Sport reports that Uefa is confident that a unity candidate can be found to stand against Infantino when he is up for re-election in March. The vote is projected to be a close one, with 106 of the 211 member associations needed to be elected, though no candidate has been formally identified. However, Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is considered a serious option. Nominations must be submitted by November 18th. BBC Sport highlights the potential for a close vote, with the ramifications for Infantino’s presidency being considered terminal, with his legitimacy compromised. Last month, European football’s 55 member associations voted to boycott all FIFA competitions until the FFE proposal was dropped ‘in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that Fifa will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.’ Following the boycott’s cessation, Fifa welcomed the development, stating it is ‘pleased that all qualified teams will be participating in the upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup.’ Six European teams – England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and hosts Poland – are slated to compete in the tournament. A Fifa spokesperson emphasized that football has the power to unite, even in challenging circumstances, and Fifa remains committed to developing the game in full dialogue with the confederations and stakeholders. Former players have expressed their concerns, with a group of former players including Manchester United and France defender Mikael Silvestre, who sits on Fifa’s Players’ Voice Panel, releasing a statement calling for change. The statement, shared on social media by individuals like England defender Lucy Bronze, France’s Emmanuel Petit, and former England goalkeeper David James, suggests a desire for greater representation and inclusivity within football. The statement further highlights the historical work Fifa and President Infantino has done to create representation for players in football across all countries, recognizing their vital role in the sport’s global evolution. The debate surrounding Infantino’s leadership continues, with some former players expressing support for his departure. A group of former Manchester United and France defender, Mikael Silvestre, issued a statement on X, titled ‘Enough is Enough!’, stating that change is necessary at Fifa. The statement was shared on social media by numerous figures, including England defender Lucy Bronze, France’s Emmanuel Petit, and former England goalkeeper David James, signifying widespread support for Infantino’s removal. The statement reinforces the consensus amongst former players that change is required. The situation is expected to continue to evolve as the FIFA Council prepares for its upcoming meeting. The implications of this decision are significant, potentially reshaping the future of football and the relationship between FIFA and its member associations.
