Germany’s election, particularly in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, has become a focal point of a significant political clash over the nation’s past, specifically concerning Nazi-era memories and the role of the regime in German history. The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is polling at an unprecedented level, indicating a strong potential for a shift in power in the region before upcoming elections on September 6th. The AfD’s manifesto positions itself as a movement seeking to ‘defund’ ‘anti-German’ art and reshape the curriculum in Saxony-Anhalt, viewing Germany’s historical memory as a ‘guilt complex’ – a claim deeply divisive within a country grappling with the legacy of Nazi crimes. At an election rally in Querfurt, 70-year-old Gerd, a supporter of the AfD, has tacked a small, frayed German flag to the handles of his mobility scooter, reflecting the party’s broader vision of a revised national narrative. The AfD’s approach is to fundamentally alter how German history is taught, including a proposal to place more emphasis on the century preceding the catastrophic conflicts of World War One and Two, rather than focusing on the era of Nazism. The party has pledged to regularly display the German flag at public schools and to bolster war memorials, reflecting a desire to actively engage with the country’s past. Other parties have explicitly ruled out coalition potential with the AfD, which is classified as right-wing extremist in several states, including Saxony-Anhalt, since 2023. Domestic intelligence investigations uncovered a local party branch’s documented anti-democratic tendencies and the party’s stated goals were deeply ingrained in a ‘racist ideology.’ The AfD generally dismisses these designations as politically motivated smears, focusing on a ‘normal’ sense of national pride. In 2018, former party co-leader Alexander Gauland likened the Nazi era to a ‘speck of bird poop,’ while another former party member, Björn Höcke, described Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial as a ‘Monument of Shame.’ The AfD has consistently rejected allegations of extremism or comparisons to National Socialism. In Saxony-Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund, a senior figure within the party’s local branch, defended the party’s patriotism agenda, stating that the AfD’s plans for Saxony-Anhalt carry echoes of National Socialism, including a pledge to cut financial support for ‘anti-German’ art. The AfD has insisted that its ‘remigration’ policy would be lawful and focus on deporting, for example, criminals and those in the country illegally. The party has also insisted that its ‘remigration’ policy would be lawful and focus on deporting, for example, people with a migration background. The BBC asked Ulrich Siegmund if he was still in contact with Sellner, and he said he had not seen him since 2023. Critics of the AfD are raising concerns that the party’s plans for Saxony-Anhalt carry echoes of National Socialism, including its pledge to cut financial support for ‘anti-German’ art. The Nazi regime held a tight grip over all spheres of Germany’s cultural life, most notably displaying works it deemed unacceptable at the ‘Degenerate Art Exhibition’ in 1937. The AfD’s controversial claim, that Germany’s culture of remembrance – Erinnerungskultur – has created a damaging identity crisis, is not new. But the AfD’s popularity is breathing new life into the argument, as it tops the polls not just in Saxony-Anhalt but nationwide – albeit with a less dramatic lead at a federal level. Widmaier, a former theatre director in Eisleben, expressed his skepticism, stating that, while the AfD’s plan for Saxony-Anhalt is vague and menacing, it represents a slippery slope toward the re-examination of Germany’s past and a dangerous revisionism of the nation’s history. The election in Saxony-Anhalt has the potential to be a pivotal moment for Germany, representing a potential shift in power within the post-war era, with the formation of an AfD government potentially marking the first time a far-right party has held significant influence in the country. The controversy surrounding the AfD’s plans for Saxony-Anhalt, with its emphasis on a revised national narrative and its re-examination of Germany’s past, is expected to fuel debate and scrutiny within the country.” , ]}})}}
