The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra has sharply declined a GH¢20 million donation intended for Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa from MTN Ghana, a subsidiary of the South African-owned MTN Group. The statement, released on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, signifies a significant shift in the government’s policy on the matter. The Ministry, in a formal declaration, stated that while acknowledging MTN’s gesture, it was unable to accept the offer due to the government’s commitment to continued humanitarian evacuations and reintegration efforts.

The Ministry’s position was initially communicated to MTN Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, on August 14, 2026, following reports suggesting a planned donation of GH¢20 million for the victims. According to the official statement, the government’s decision stemmed from the fact that adequate provision for ongoing evacuations and reintegration of Ghanaian nationals had already been made, rendering the donation request impossible.

The Ministry further emphasized its unwavering commitment to the humanitarian evacuation process and the financial support for the reintegration of all affected individuals. A comprehensive cost account of the evacuation exercise, meticulously detailing all expenses, will be presented as soon as the process concludes, adhering to transparency and accountability standards. The Ministry assured the public that the government remains fully dedicated to the continued evacuation and reintegration of Ghanaian nationals, irrespective of their origin, ensuring the well-being of all citizens.

This decision comes amidst growing scrutiny of MTN’s operations within Ghana, with concerns raised about potential impacts on local businesses and economic stability. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to fostering a favorable business environment for international brands operating within Ghana, assuring continued support for economic growth and development. It also stated that the government will continue to prioritize the welfare of all Ghanaians, highlighting the paramount importance of their safety and security, and the government’s unwavering dedication to their return home.” , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
