A recent study conducted by Professor Elijah Yendaw at the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) in Wa, Ghana, has uncovered a concerning trend: the increasing reliance on unofficial border crossings for immigrant movement within Ghana. The research, titled ‘Cross-Border Migration of Itinerant Immigrant Retailers in Ghana,’ examines the link between inadequate documentation, financial hardship, and the choice of routes, arguing that strengthening border security must extend beyond traditional surveillance.

The study, which analyzed data from 779 itinerant retailers from West African countries in the Accra Metropolis, reveals a significant proportion – 58.2% – entering Ghana through unapproved routes. This figure is further bolstered by 41.8% utilizing recognized border crossings, indicating a substantial reliance on alternative pathways.
According to Professor Yendaw, the research establishes a direct correlation between the availability of travel documents and migrants’ choices of entry point. Specifically, 95.8% of respondents who possessed documentation chose official crossing points, demonstrating the critical role of official documentation in facilitating movement.
However, the study also highlights the significant impact of financial hardship. 95.8% of respondents struggling to fund their journeys cited using unapproved routes as a means of accessing the country. Furthermore, the research found that 98.4% of individuals with travel documents entered through authorized crossing points, signifying a clear preference for official pathways.
The study’s policy brief, ‘Free Movement, Unapproved Routes: Closing Ghana’s Documentation, Trust and Border-Governance Gaps for West African Itinerant Traders,’ details the implications of this trend. It advocates for a shift in focus from solely tightening controls to creating safer, more transparent, and more accessible border management systems. The brief proposes several interventions, including simplifying approved routes, improving travel document accessibility and pre-departure information, and establishing credible mechanisms for reporting extortion.
Specifically, the report suggests evidence-based surveillance along migration corridors, strengthening databases on mobile immigrant traders, and enhanced collaboration with migrant associations and border communities. It also recommends that authorities should provide clear information regarding required documents, authorized fees, processing times, and complaint or support channels at border posts.
The study emphasizes that effective migration management necessitates improved border governance rather than solely concentrating on tightening controls. The researchers propose that official crossing points should be made safer, more transparent, easier to navigate, and more appealing than irregular alternatives. The report also suggests the formation of partnerships between government, transport unions, migrant associations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to educate travelers about documentation requirements and their rights and responsibilities under ECOWAS free-movement protocols. The study underscores the importance of communicating such information in widely spoken regional languages through radio, transport terminals, and visual materials, reinforcing that this information should be disseminated widely across the region.
The study concludes that, in order to effectively manage migration, authorities should treat border communities as partners, supporting route mapping, public education and early identification of changing migration patterns. It urges authorities to regard border communities as stakeholders in orderly migration, emphasizing their involvement in supporting route mapping, public education, and the early identification of changing migration patterns.
