The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently rejected claims that Alhaji Abdul-Latif Copshe, a prominent suspect in the 2024 election-related violence at Nyankpala in the Tolon Constituency, has been elected as the party’s Constituency Youth Organiser. This denial follows a contentious statement by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, who declared Copshe as the winner of the NPP’s Constituency Youth Organiser election despite reports suggesting his departure from the community following the incident.
NPP Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, issued this crucial clarification during a live interview with Accra-based Citi FM. He stated unequivocally that Ibrahim Abdel Wahab, not Copshe, is the current party’s Youth Organiser for Tolon, and that Copshe is currently being sought by security agencies due to the violence at the scene.
The situation began with a comment from Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak on August 24, 2026, which stated that Copshe had been declared the winner despite reportedly leaving the community after the incident. This announcement ignited immediate scrutiny within the NPP leadership, and the NPP Deputy General Secretary immediately refuted the claim.
Mr. Mohammed explained that the minister’s account is ‘not truthful’ and insists that Ibrahim Abdel Wahab was indeed elected to the position. He further stated that the party’s youth organiser, Ibrahim Abdel Wahab, has not been elected as a youth organiser in Tolon.
He detailed a timeline of events, asserting that Copshe served as the party’s Youth Organiser for a period of several years, and that he no longer holds that role. According to Mr. Mohammed, the tenure of this position expired at the time of the constituency election in July.
Furthermore, the NPP Deputy General Secretary acknowledged that he knew Copshe personally but explained that he had previously held the position and that he no longer occupies it. He stated that he had previously served as the party’s Youth Organiser and that he was not holding that position currently.
Regarding reports suggesting Copshe had left the area and was wanted by security agencies, Mr. Mohammed asserted that the responsibility for apprehending him rested solely with the security agencies, who are actively pursuing him. He emphasized that the NPP is committed to ensuring Copshe’s safe return and continued investigation.
However, the discussion shifted to a potential distinction between the roles of Constituency Youth Organiser and Constituency Organiser. Host of Eyewitness News, Umaru Sanda, suggested a possible scenario where Copshe might have been elected as the Constituency Organiser despite being wanted by security agencies, provided the relevant records confirm this.
Mr. Mohammed clarified that while he could not immediately confirm this claim without reviewing the official party records, he stated that he could not verify it without further checks, as he was working with records from all 276 constituencies. He said that he could verify that, unless he verifies it from the official report, because he is dealing with records from all 276 constituencies.
