A groundbreaking new study published in the British Medical Journal has revealed that at least one in four former NFL players experienced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head blows. Researchers analyzed data from 878 former players who died between 2016 and 2021, with 235 of these individuals having donated their brains to research. Of those, 215 were found to have CTE, a diagnosis only possible after death. The study, conducted by Dr. Daniel Daneshvar, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, indicates that NFL players have a significantly higher prevalence of CTE than the general population.

’We and others have shown that in NFL players, specifically, there is about a four times higher rate of death from neurodegenerative disease than the general population,’ said Dr. Daneshvar. ‘These findings suggest that NFL players have a higher prevalence of CTE at death than has been previously shown in multiple community-based studies.’

The research calculated a “conservative minimum” of CTE prevalence among those who died in the six-year period to be 24.5% – rising to a “maximum” of 97.7%. Researchers cautioned that these figures represent a substantial risk. They have urged the NFL to take preventative measures to reduce repetitive head impacts across all levels of the sport.

The report highlighted that these former players’ head impacts didn’t occur at the NFL level; they occurred at the collegiate and high school levels, and in many cases, at the youth level. All of these cumulative hits to the head contributed to an increased risk. A spokesperson for the NFL stated: ‘The NFL continuously strives to make the game of football safer, including by implementing strategies to reduce concussions and head impacts.’ The NFL remains committed to ensuring that the NFL community has access to a robust – and expanding – set of resources to enhance their physical and mental well-being.

Furthermore, the study examined the prevalence of dementia among brain donors. The study also revealed a link between head impacts and CTE, a finding that has been previously observed in multiple community-based studies. The study’s findings underscore the importance of addressing the health risks associated with repetitive head trauma in the NFL. The study also found that a 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement for the NFL limited contact practices. Following a long-running class action, in 2016, the NFL agreed a $1 billion (£700 million) settlement with more than 5,000 former players. The study’s implications are significant, potentially reshaping the approach to player safety within the NFL. The research indicates a need for increased monitoring and preventative measures to mitigate the long-term health consequences of repeated head impacts.
