The government has successfully seized approximately GH¢6.9 million and US$440,000 in cash, along with related assets, suspected of involvement in illicit drug trafficking activities. This significant financial seizure underscores a multifaceted government initiative targeting the financial networks and assets of these individuals.
Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, announced the operation during a press briefing on Monday, August 24th. He explained that the seizure represents a critical component of a broader intelligence-led campaign designed to disrupt not only drug users and distributors but also the financial infrastructure supporting these criminal enterprises.
Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak detailed that security agencies have been actively tracing and freezing assets linked to the suspected trafficking of narcotics. The investigation and subsequent prosecutions are currently underway. “Our campaign is not merely focused on users, but on those facilitating the movement of illicit funds,” he stated, emphasizing the ongoing legal processes.
The Ministry revealed that 73 assets linked to suspected drug-related activities had been identified during the period under review. Furthermore, approximately 19 kilogrammes of gold had been seized, representing a substantial financial loss.
“Cash that has been associated with these persons involved in these drugs, approximately 6.9 million and then about 440,000 US dollars, has been restrained,” Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak asserted. The Minister also provided insights into the government’s intensified efforts, noting that between January 2025 and July 2026, security agencies seized over 8,500 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs and approximately 45.4 million tramadol tablets. This intensified campaign has also resulted in 217 arrests, with 165 prosecutions initiated over the period. The government intends to further strengthen intelligence gathering, asset tracing, and enforcement measures to disrupt drug trafficking networks and prevent illicit proceeds from being channeled into other criminal activities.
