The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally announced plans to publish a Special Edition of the Ghanaian Envoy, its official newsletter, dedicated to Ghana’s Reparatory Justice Agenda. This initiative represents a significant step towards fostering greater understanding and engagement on a critical aspect of Ghana’s national narrative. The special edition will chronicle Ghana’s journey, advocacy and efforts in advancing this vital agenda, highlighting key milestones, initiatives, engagements, and perspectives on the country’s continued pursuit of justice, recognition, and appropriate redress for historical injustices stemming from the transatlantic slave trade and colonial legacies. The Ministry is actively seeking contributions from a diverse range of stakeholders, including members of the public, academics, researchers, practitioners, civil society organizations, historians, and other interested individuals.

The call for articles is particularly focused on the historical context of reparatory justice – examining the enduring impact of these injustices and the ongoing efforts to address them. The special edition is expected to delve into the complexities of this agenda, examining the challenges faced, the successes achieved, and potential pathways forward. Recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service indicates that the country has committed to a national Reparatory Justice Strategy since 2018, with a significant increase in funding allocated to this area within the last five years. Furthermore, the Ministry has been actively engaging with international organizations and governments, including the United Nations and the African Union, to support Ghana’s efforts in establishing frameworks for accountability and restorative justice. A recent report by the African Development Bank estimates that reparations represent a significant opportunity for economic development and social cohesion within Ghana. The Ministry envisions this special edition as a vital platform for disseminating this knowledge and stimulating further dialogue on the necessity and potential of a comprehensive reparatory justice framework. The deadline for submissions is September 2, 2026, and the Ministry anticipates receiving thoughtful and insightful contributions that will enrich national and international discourse on Ghana’s Reparatory Justice Agenda. The publication of this special edition is viewed as a crucial element in strengthening Ghana’s position on the global stage, particularly in its engagement with issues of historical redress and reconciliation. A preliminary analysis by the Ghana Institute of Transnational Studies and Development Studies (GITSS) suggests that the country’s commitment to reparatory justice is increasingly recognized and valued, and the publication of this special edition is expected to play a key role in reinforcing this perception. The Ministry intends to utilize a robust online submission platform, accessible via ipab@mfa.gov.gh, for submissions. The focus of the special edition will include a detailed look at the legal framework established in 2018, as well as an examination of the challenges currently hindering progress. The Ministry also intends to feature case studies of successful reparatory justice initiatives, both domestically and internationally, to provide concrete examples of the potential for positive change. The publication of this edition is a strategic reflection of the Ghana government’s commitment to addressing its past and building a more equitable future, underscoring the importance of acknowledging and reconciling with the legacy of colonialism and slavery.”

The Ministry’s website highlights a growing number of publications and events related to this topic, demonstrating a national emphasis on this crucial aspect of national identity and development. The goal is to create a platform for collaborative discussion and action, contributing to a more just and equitable Ghana for all citizens.”
