The government has enacted a significant measure of financial control, seizing approximately GH¢6.9 million and $440,000 in cash linked to suspected individuals involved in illicit drug trafficking operations.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak revealed this during a Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24th. The seizure, a strategic initiative designed to disrupt the financial networks and assets of these suspected traffickers, extends beyond the arrest of users and distributors.
‘Our campaign is not just focused on the users, but those who are actively facilitating the movement of illicit goods,’ Minister Mohammed-Mubarak stated. He emphasized that the objective is to comprehensively dismantle the financial infrastructure supporting the drug trade.
The Ministry has traced 73 assets linked to suspected drug-related activities, representing a substantial sum of GH¢6.9 million. Furthermore, approximately 19 kilogrammes of gold were seized in suspected money laundering cases, highlighting a deliberate effort to obfuscate the illicit flow of funds.
‘We have identified a pattern of activity,’ Minister Mohammed-Mubarak explained. ‘During the period from January 2025 to July 2026, security agencies seized over 8,500 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs, and approximately 45.4 million tramadol tablets.’ A total of 217 arrests were made, and 165 prosecutions were initiated to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
