The government has enacted a significant measure of financial control, seizing approximately GH¢6.9 million and $440,000 in cash linked to suspected individuals involved in illicit drug trafficking operations.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak revealed this during a Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24th. The seizure, a strategic initiative designed to disrupt the financial networks and assets of these suspected traffickers, extends beyond the arrest of users and distributors.

‘Our campaign is not just focused on the users, but those who are actively facilitating the movement of illicit goods,’ Minister Mohammed-Mubarak stated. He emphasized that the objective is to comprehensively dismantle the financial infrastructure supporting the drug trade.

The Ministry has traced 73 assets linked to suspected drug-related activities, representing a substantial sum of GH¢6.9 million. Furthermore, approximately 19 kilogrammes of gold were seized in suspected money laundering cases, highlighting a deliberate effort to obfuscate the illicit flow of funds.

‘We have identified a pattern of activity,’ Minister Mohammed-Mubarak explained. ‘During the period from January 2025 to July 2026, security agencies seized over 8,500 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs, and approximately 45.4 million tramadol tablets.’ A total of 217 arrests were made, and 165 prosecutions were initiated to combat drug trafficking and abuse.

The seizure reflects the government’s broader strategy to disrupt the financial flows that sustain the drug trade. The Minister noted that the seized assets will be forfeited to the state, ensuring a deterrent effect against further criminal activity. The government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking underscores its dedication to protecting the public and bolstering national security.

This action represents a significant escalation in efforts to curtail the illicit drug trade within the country, according to officials. The Ministry’s focus on disrupting financial networks is a key component of a multi-faceted strategy aimed at reducing the risks associated with drug trafficking.

Further details regarding the specific methods and investigations employed will be released in the coming days.

This initiative has been met with support from various law enforcement agencies, demonstrating a collective commitment to combating this persistent problem.

The government has consistently emphasized the importance of strengthening border security and implementing stricter regulations to prevent the flow of illicit goods.

This significant monetary sum underscores the government’s resolve to significantly curtail the supply of narcotics within the nation.

“This action signals a serious commitment to safeguarding the interests of the nation,” stated a source within the Ministry, who wished to remain anonymous. The seizure of these assets is a crucial step in demonstrating the government’s determination to dismantle the criminal networks that profit from the illicit drug trade.

Experts suggest that this action will likely have a significant impact on the overall drug market, potentially reducing revenue for criminal organizations and hindering their ability to operate.

The Ministry has stated that they will continue to monitor and investigate any further suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.

“We are determined to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all citizens,” Minister Mohammed-Mubarak concluded. The focus remains on protecting the community and ensuring a responsible approach to addressing this complex challenge.
