Niger State, Nigeria, is currently grappling with a severe security crisis following a series of coordinated attacks targeting numerous villages and mosques across the central region. Initial reports indicate the kidnapping of dozens of individuals, primarily centered in the Dekara district of Borgu Local Government Area, have become a major concern for authorities and international observers. The incidents, which began around 2:00 PM (13:00 GMT) on Friday, have sparked widespread anxiety and calls for urgent action.

The initial assault, orchestrated by armed men affiliated with the Lakurawa group, targeted several villages, including Gidan-Zana and Kpenya, in the Dekara district. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that the initial attacks were a response to a series of kidnappings targeting worshippers at the Kpenya Mosque, a significant religious site within the area. He stated that police were initially unaware of the extent of the kidnappings but acknowledged the deployment of a joint security detachment to assess the situation and conduct rescue operations.

According to Abiodun, the police have not yet confirmed the precise number of individuals taken, acknowledging that the figure remains ‘uncertain’ due to the ongoing nature of the operations. Local residents, who have been providing accounts of the abduction, estimate that over 60 worshippers were affected, though this figure has not been independently verified. Some residents claim that a group of approximately 60 people were abducted, with a significant number reportedly killed, a claim that has been met with skepticism. The Lakurawa armed group, notorious for its brutality, has been implicated in the attacks, with several survivors describing the violence as ‘slaughter’.

Separately, reports emerged of individuals being killed during the attacks, with another claim of violence attributed to members of the Lakurawa, who reportedly engaged in a clash with the kidnappers. A third group, identified as Mahmuda, intervened, reportedly forcing the kidnappers to flee.

Federal lawmakers Jafaru Mohammed stated that several nearby villages were also targeted, with the Mahmuda group allegedly opposing the Lakurawa doctrine, leading to a confrontation. Mohammed indicated that this escalation of violence is part of a broader trend of armed groups and fighters from neighboring regions, including the Yoruba-speaking area of Benin, which has been experiencing heightened activity for years.

The attacks are particularly concerning given Niger State’s location near Benin and the neighboring region of the Beninese Confederation. The region has historically been a focal point for local armed groups and fighters, contributing to a complex and escalating security situation. The Lakurawa group has a history of engaging in violent activities, and the recent attacks suggest a deliberate effort to destabilize the region. The government has been struggling to effectively combat these threats, highlighting the urgent need for increased security measures and a coordinated response. The lack of clear information about the number of individuals kidnapped and the precise motives behind the attacks continues to fuel concerns among residents and international observers.

The violence has resulted in several fatalities, including a man and his family who were killed while fleeing the area, and further underscores the risk to the civilian population. The incident underscores the vulnerability of the region to organized crime and the potential for further escalating violence, requiring immediate attention from authorities and international partners. The attack also raises questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the potential for a prolonged period of instability in Niger State.
