The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is embarking on a significant transformation of its printing processes, introducing a decentralized model designed to drastically reduce the lengthy delays currently experienced by applicants across the nation. This initiative, announced by the DVLA Chief Executive, Julius Neequaye Kotey, will see selected DVLA offices independently producing driver’s licences, rather than relying solely on the Authority’s headquarters for printing operations. Currently, only two machines at the DVLA headquarters are responsible for the printing of licences for applicants nationwide, a situation that has demonstrably contributed to substantial delays, with some motorists reportedly awaiting up to a year for their cards. The existing system has resulted in a significant strain on the driver’s population, with a substantial number of individuals facing months of uncertainty before receiving their licenses. The DVLA Chief Executive, Julius Neequaye Kotey, revealed this plan during the commissioning of a new DVLA office at Amrahia in the Adenta Municipality on Friday, August 21st. He explained that decentralisation will improve efficiency and allow individual offices to serve applicants more quickly. Mr. Kotey clarified that immediate printing would initially be limited to replacement licences. He stated that motorists renewing expired six-year licences would be able to receive their replacement cards instantly under the new system. “Every office will now print, but we are printing instantly for only replacement of cards,” he said. He emphasized that applicants seeking licenses for the first time would still need to complete the mandatory three-month process before their cards could be issued. According to the DVLA, the requirement forms part of international licensing standards and is not unique to Ghana. “But when you are coming for a new licence, you have to go through the three months before you get your card,” he said. The DVLA is expected to progressively implement the new printing arrangement across its offices as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and drastically reduce waiting times. The Authority is also launching a strategic document to strengthen Ghana’s public health emergency response, including a police arrest of a suspect over GH¢1.1 million for engaging in a fake gold scam at Berekum. This move represents a major shift in the DVLA’s operational strategy, aiming to address longstanding concerns about processing times and improve overall service quality for drivers throughout the country. The implementation is expected to be rolled out in phases, initially focusing on the Amrahia office and subsequently expanding across the country, according to the DVLA’s statement.” , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
