The Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has issued a stark warning regarding escalating nationwide power outages, characterizing the recent disruptions as a critical issue demanding immediate attention from the government and regulatory bodies. His comments, made following the second significant power outage that occurred within a month, highlight a growing concern among Ghanaians regarding the stability of Ghana’s energy infrastructure. The incidents, which began with a widespread blackout on Thursday morning, represent a worrying trend, marking the second major disruption to Ghana’s power system within the past month after the July 29 blackout that impacted a considerable portion of the country.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah emphasized that while power was restored relatively quickly following both incidents, the frequency and magnitude of these outages are deeply unsettling. ‘Within a space of one month, we’ve experienced two major shutdowns,’ he stated, stressing that the situation is ‘a cause for genuine worry’ for every Ghanaian citizen. The frequency of these disruptions is unprecedented, extending across the entire nation and significantly impacting essential services.

His expectations for a formal parliamentary inquiry are clear. According to Mr. Adomako-Mensah, the Energy Committee is scheduled to convene on Monday, August 24th, to address the situation and determine the root causes of the outages. He explicitly requested the presence of GRIDCo (the Ghana Power Generation Co.) and the Minister of Energy to appear before the committee. ‘We need to understand precisely where the problems lie,’ Mr. Adomako-Mensah asserted. ‘Parliament must establish the causes of these outages and determine whether appropriate measures are being implemented to prevent further system-wide failures and ensure a reliable power supply for all Ghanaians.’

The government has acknowledged the concerns and has stated that it is ‘actively investigating’ the situation. The Ministry of Energy has pledged to launch a thorough review of the system’s vulnerabilities and to implement corrective measures to mitigate future disruptions. However, Mr. Adomako-Mensah’s repeated assertion of the problem’s severity underscores the palpable anxiety felt by many Ghanaians, highlighting the potential for further instability if the situation isn’t addressed swiftly and decisively. The extended downtime has already impacted critical infrastructure, including transportation, businesses, and households, raising concerns about the long-term economic consequences.

According to a recent report by the Institute for Economic Research and Forecasting (IERF), Ghana’s power sector has been experiencing a concerning increase in outages over the past year, with an estimated 20% of households experiencing power interruptions during peak hours. This data, coupled with the recent disruptions, reinforces the urgency of the situation and the need for a comprehensive strategy to ensure grid resilience. Further investigations are expected to focus on potential vulnerabilities in the grid’s maintenance schedule and the resilience of distribution networks. The incident has also triggered a debate about the adequacy of the current regulatory framework and the need for enhanced monitoring and control mechanisms.
