The annual Damba Festival, a cornerstone of Dagbon traditions and a significant economic driver for the region, has been abruptly cancelled by the Dagbon Traditional Council following the death of Overlord Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II. The decision comes after a difficult and deeply symbolic process, reflecting a longstanding tradition within Dagbon Kingdom.

Announcing the cancellation on July 12th, 2026, head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Naa Yeb Kug’naa Adam Abdulai, explained the necessity of allowing the traditional area to adequately mourn the passing of Ya-Na. The late monarch’s death occurred just barely a month prior to the festival’s planned celebrations, triggering the immediate action.

The Dagbon custom dictates a protracted period of mourning following the death of a king, a period considered vital for the healing and restoration of the community. The Council stated that the cancellation is firmly rooted in this established tradition, emphasizing the importance of respecting the mourning process.

“In our tradition, it is proper that we respectfully give time for Dagbon to heal from this devastating loss,” the statement emphasized. “To celebrate in joy while our hearts are still mourning will not be in the spirit of our customs and values.” This sentiment underscores the deep-seated significance of the Damba Festival in Dagbon culture.

The Council’s announcement has understandably caused concern amongst travellers, businesses, and cultural groups preparing for the event, acknowledging a considerable disappointment. They stressed understanding and shared in the loss, and have urged respect for the mourning period.

Furthermore, the Council acknowledged the profound impact of the cancellation on those who had already made preparations for the festival, including those traveling to Dagbon and engaging in cultural activities. The Council expressed sympathy for the travelers and businesses, stating that the best way to honour the late Ya-Na for now was through quiet reflection and prayer. They prayed for strength for the people of Dagbon during the mourning period and expressed hope that the soul of Ya-Na would find rest in Jannah.

The legacy and bond between the late Ya-Na and the people of Dagbon are considered inextricably linked, and the Council reiterated the importance of preserving this historical connection. The Dagbon Kingdom has expressed its grief and solidarity with the community during this difficult time, recognizing the profound significance of the Damba Festival in the region’s identity and economic prosperity.

The Council has indicated that the focus will remain on quiet reflection and prayer, ensuring the community can process the loss while preserving the traditional customs and values deeply ingrained within the Dagbon Kingdom. The event’s absence will be keenly felt, representing a significant loss for the community and a lasting disruption to a cherished tradition.”
