Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has issued a directive mandating the installation of reflectors on all aboboyaa and tricycle vehicles operating within the city, a move designed to significantly enhance road safety and visibility, particularly during nighttime hours and periods of reduced visibility. The directive, effective at the end of August, represents a substantial shift in the AMA’s strategy to combat accidents and improve the safety of all road users, focusing specifically on tricycles and aboboyaa operators. The announcement follows a comprehensive review of road safety issues in Accra, with a particular emphasis on mitigating risks associated with nighttime driving and poor visibility conditions. The AMA’s rationale is rooted in a growing concern about the lack of adequate illumination and visibility for these vehicles, which often contribute to accidents. Specifically, the directive aims to create a more visible presence for these operators, encouraging safer driving practices and reducing the likelihood of collisions. The Mayor emphasized the importance of reflective devices, stating that all operators must install back and side reflectors on their vehicles. He further directed operators to avoid utilizing the inner lanes of major highways, advocating for the use of alternative side roads as a primary means of navigation. This directive extends to all aboboyaa and tricycle operators within the metropolis, regardless of their cargo or services, and is a direct response to warnings issued against utilizing these lanes. Mr. Allotey stressed the importance of strict adherence to the directive, stating that the Assembly will begin enforcement at the end of August. He cautioned against any actions that could undermine the directive and warned that the Assembly will take swift action against violations. The Mayor acknowledged the contributions of the Youth Development Ministry, particularly the work of OSP, who has saved approximately GH¢5.73 billion, securing seven convictions in 2025 through the Ghana Traffic Safety Office (GACC). The directive underscores the AMA’s commitment to proactively addressing road safety challenges, aligning with a broader vision for a safer Accra for all citizens. The implementation of this measure is expected to significantly impact the operational safety of these vital transport modes, bolstering efforts to reduce accidents and improve overall road user safety. The Mayor urged operators to exercise caution and cooperate with authorities, highlighting the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety across the city.
