Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a critical directive aimed at bolstering road safety within the city, specifically targeting aboboyaa and tricycle operators. The directive, effective by the end of August, compels all operators within Accra’s metropolis to install reflective devices on their vehicles. This initiative stems from a proactive approach by the AMA to mitigate risks associated with nighttime driving and visibility challenges, particularly for these smaller tricycle and aboboyaa vehicles. The directive’s core focus is to dramatically increase the visibility of these vehicles to other road users, including motorists and pedestrians.

Specifically, the Mayor emphasized that all operators must install reflectors on the rear and both sides of their vehicles. Mr. Allotey stated, ‘All of them must have reflectors, the back and the sides,’ reinforcing the urgency of this mandate. The AMA is directing operators to avoid utilizing the inner lanes of major highways, a significant shift in traffic management strategy. The directive mandates operators to always utilize the side roads, a stark contrast to the traditional reliance on the inner lanes.

Furthermore, the Mayor clarified that operators utilizing highways must take precautions and ensure their vehicles are clearly visible to other motorists. If a vehicle is required to use a highway, it must take the necessary precautions, including driving out early with reflectors, as stipulated. The AMA is imposing this measure to reduce accidents and improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians. The directive is designed to mitigate risks and enhance the overall safety of the city’s roadways.

According to the AMA, the directive applies to all aboboyaa and tricycle operators operating within Accra, irrespective of the type of goods or services they provide. The Mayor warned that the Assembly will begin enforcing this directive at the end of August, emphasizing the seriousness of the commitment to improve road safety. ‘If anybody or any operator decides to go contrary to whatever we are saying, we will make sure the law takes place,’ Mr. Allotey cautioned. The Mayor further urged operators to exercise caution when using major roads and cooperate with the authorities as the Assembly works to improve road safety across Accra. The focus of the directive is to reduce risks and improve the safety of all road users.

This initiative comes in the context of a broader effort by the Ghana College of Information and Communications Technology (OGCIT) to create Youth Development Ministry – Osman Ayariga highlighted. The OGCIT’s work to foster youth development is being lauded by many as a positive step towards a brighter future for Ghana. The directive is a direct response to the growing concerns about road safety and the need for enhanced visibility, aligning with the AMA’s strategic objectives.”

The directive will be enforced beginning at the end of August, and the AMA is actively working with relevant authorities to ensure its effective implementation. The focus is on reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing the safety of all road users, particularly those utilizing smaller tricycle and aboboyaa vehicles. The AMA also wants to improve the safety of all road users. The directive is a vital step in the ongoing commitment to prioritize road safety within Accra’s urban landscape.
