The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has issued a forceful challenge to Ghana’s mining industry, demanding a fundamental shift in its approach to social responsibility. In a pivotal address at the National Mining Dialogue 2026 in Accra, Ms. Darko-Opoku underscored that the true wealth of Ghana is not rooted in extracted resources but resides in its people, a sentiment she repeatedly emphasized throughout her remarks.

Speaking to mining executives, investors, and policymakers, the GMTF Administrator warned that the industry’s current focus on corporate social responsibility – primarily through roads, schools, and boreholes – is insufficient. She argued that true wealth must extend beyond mere economic gains, encompassing the well-being of communities impacted by mining operations.

“You do not extract value from the soil; you extract value through people,” she stated, a stark warning delivered with palpable urgency. With this imperative, the GMTF Administrator initiated a critical challenge: to prioritize healthcare systems that safeguard the lives of individuals within mining communities.

The message resonated with a harrowing reality: in Ghana, families often experience devastating consequences when diagnosed with conditions like prostate cancer, leading to financial ruin and the loss of vital assets. The devastating impact on families living outside Accra, where the situation becomes even more perilous, is a stark example of this reality.

In a particularly poignant moment, the Administrator directly confronted the assumption that wealth could shield people from Ghana’s healthcare challenges. She recounted a recent, and tragically illustrated, scenario – a heart attack occurring in the middle of the night, when there’s no time to fly a patient to London or Johannesburg. The experience highlighted the stark reality: wealth does not inherently translate to immediate medical intervention.

“At 2:00 AM, money cannot buy time. In a medical emergency, your wealth does not save you; the infrastructure nearest to you does,” she stated, emphasizing the crucial point.

Furthermore, the GMTF revealed worrying statistics demonstrating a critical deficiency within Ghana’s public tertiary health sector. According to a nationwide needs assessment, only two functional MRI machines, five mammogram machines, and two public radiotherapy machines were available across teaching, regional, and referral hospitals. The northern sector, in particular, lacked the necessary equipment, serving millions of people with a shockingly low percentage of practicing cardiologists.

The consequences of this disparity are measured not merely in statistics, but in the lives of individuals. For many families outside Accra, the situation becomes even more painful when they are told that the required equipment to save a loved one simply doesn’t exist nearby.

Turning to the mining industry, the Administrator challenged companies to move beyond the traditional definition of Corporate Social Responsibility. For decades, mining companies had consistently demonstrated their commitment to host communities through projects like schools, boreholes, and roads, demonstrating a tangible benefit to local populations.

“A true Social License cannot simply mean, ‘The community tolerates our presence.’ It must mean, ‘Because this company operates here, our people live longer, healthier lives.’” She asked industry leaders to envision a mining company being able to communicate directly with communities, ‘We didn’t just extract gold from your soil. We built the regional Cancer Centre that saved your mother. We installed the Cath Lab that saved your chief.’

She then prompted mining companies to embrace a new legacy – one centered on the long-term health and well-being of communities, not just short-term economic gains. The Administrator concluded with a profound reminder: ‘The gold beneath our soil is valuable. But Ghana’s greatest resource has never been underground. Ghana’s greatest resource is the Ghanaian.”

The administrator concluded with an emotionally charged plea: ‘Years from now, history will remember how many ounces of gold they extracted, their quarterly profits, and the contracts they signed. But families will remember the hospital that saved a father. A child will remember the equipment that helped a mother survive cancer. A doctor will remember the company that provided the tools to save a life. And communities will remember businesses that stood with them when survival was on the line.’

Subsequently, the Administrator invited mining companies to partner with the GMTF to map healthcare needs in their operational areas, co-invest in urgently needed medical equipment, sponsor the training of specialists, and build healthcare infrastructure capable of serving communities long after mining operations have ended.
