The Tano North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Pius Sampson Opoku, has vehemently denied allegations that he operates a personal taskforce to combat illegal mining activities within the municipality. This denial was made during a morning show broadcast on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, where Mr. Opoku addressed concerns raised about potential clandestine operations. The MCE stated unequivocally that the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), in collaboration with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Regional Security Council, continues to actively pursue illegal mining operations across the area. Mr. Opoku emphasized that authorities often receive intelligence regarding these activities but frequently struggle to apprehend suspects due to the miners’ swift and often evasive flight patterns. He explained that, when a tip-off is received, security teams often arrive and sacks the individuals before the miners escape, a situation he described as ‘working very hard.’
He further asserted that the Assembly’s commitment to combating illegal mining is a crucial aspect of their efforts, particularly concerning the protection of water bodies and natural resources. Mr. Opoku highlighted that the MCE is working in close coordination with NAIMOS and the Regional Security Council to intensify these efforts and safeguard the municipality’s valuable assets. He emphasized that the Assembly is dedicated to tackling illegal mining due to its detrimental impact on the environment.
Specifically, the MCE stated that the recognized bodies involved in anti-galamsey operations include NAIMOS and the Municipal Assembly. He clarified that no taskforce is recognized aside from NAIMOS and the Municipal Assembly. He stressed that, in the absence of a recognized taskforce, the government does not have a hand in such operations. Mr. Opoku underscored that the Assembly remains steadfast in its commitment to tackling illegal mining, recognizing its significant impact on the environment.
Furthermore, the MCE acknowledged the concerns surrounding the destruction of farmlands, forests, and water bodies resulting from illegal mining activities in the Tanoso area. The Tanoso Police Command has already arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in or cooperation with these illegal activities. The situation has been escalating, with allegations of increased illegal mining activities being reported in the region, prompting increased scrutiny and action by the authorities.
