A multi-vehicle crash on the Ofankor–Pokuase stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway, just over a week after a separate incident involving 12 lives claimed, has resulted in a further surge in serious injuries. The latest collision, occurring Wednesday morning, saw four vehicles – a VIP bus, a military vehicle, a Toyota Vitz, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle – involved in the mayhem. No fatalities were immediately recorded in the incident, but one person sustained serious injuries and was transported to a medical facility, raising concerns about the overall safety of the area. The crash has significantly worsened traffic congestion on the Kumasi-bound lanes, causing substantial delays for motorists traveling towards the city. The Ga North Municipal Chief Executive, Akwetey Agbo, has attributed the recurring incidents to driver negligence and has called for increased speed camera installations to mitigate the risks. He emphasized the critical need for motorists to exercise heightened caution, particularly when descending from the John Teye area towards Pokuase, urging them to slow down considerably to prevent further accidents. The incident follows a previous report detailing a fatal accident a little over a year ago, where an articulated truck experienced brake failure and crashed into seven vehicles, resulting in two fatalities and three injuries. Prior to this, concerns were raised about road conditions on the wider Achimota–Pokuase corridor, with reports of malfunctioning streetlights and poorly lit sections, particularly between Festus and Sapeiman, which impacted traffic flow. Furthermore, ongoing works on the Ofankor–Nsawam Road have introduced further disruptions, diverting Kumasi-bound traffic onto a service road between Festus and Sapeiman, affecting routes around Pokuase and Amasaman. The latest crash is likely to intensify calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and further improvements in road safety measures. Traffic management authorities are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including potential factors contributing to the repeated crashes on the Ofankor–Pokuase corridor, and are assessing the need for enhanced monitoring of motorists.
