South Korea’s annual joint military drills with the United States will be curtailed by six days following a request from Washington, the Defense Ministry announced today. The move follows a series of adjustments to the 2026 Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which had been initially conceived as a period and scale of collaboration between the two nations. The Ministry stated that the duration of the drill, originally slated for August 27th, has been shortened to August 21st, a change that was made due to a proposal from Washington’s side.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun conveyed this news during a parliamentary hearing, stating that officials in Seoul and Washington had been unaware of Trump’s intentions regarding the exercise. The combined field training exercise component of the drills will now be partially reduced in scale. Sources indicate that the specifics of this reduction remain under discussion, though the exact extent is still subject to refinement.
The announcement comes as US officials have reportedly privately discussed a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during Trump’s upcoming trip to Asia, specifically to China, scheduled for November. This trip is expected to coincide with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in China summit. Trump’s recent statement on Truth Social, where he described the exercises as ‘costly, with a lot of costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!),’ further amplified the situation, linking his decision to South Korea’s refusal to ‘give us a little hand’ with Iran. He asserted that the decision stems from the US president’s private conversations with Kim Jong Un regarding the potential for a discussion about denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which the North Korean leader declined to respond to.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, initially conceived as a similar in-scale event with approximately 18,000 South Korean soldiers participating, has been a regular occurrence for decades. Currently, approximately 28,500 American military personnel are stationed in South Korea, representing a significant portion of the combined military presence. The exercise is designed to enhance joint defense capabilities and maintain a presence in the region. Military leaders emphasized that the training accounts for a critical threat posed by North Korean troops, referring to the return of troops from the battlefield to aid Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Ministry stated that the US military spokesperson Ryan Donald affirmed that the training is a standard component of the exercises.
Further, North Korea has condemned the joint military drills as a ‘rehearsal for an aggressive war’ following the exercise.
