The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has initiated a significant initiative to bolster the economic prospects of 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the city’s diverse neighborhoods. This program, designed to promote independence and improve livelihoods, represents a crucial step in addressing the specific challenges faced by this community. The initiative, a pilot program implemented in phases, has been approved by President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to supporting PWDs.
The beneficiaries, comprising 27 males and 23 females with a wide array of disabilities and varying support needs, received a substantial package of assistance, encompassing crucial starting capital, essential tools, and assistive devices. This support, initiated in batches based on individual needs assessment, is a direct response to the Assembly’s mandate to foster economic empowerment.
The initial allocation included business capital, strategically placed chest freezers, refrigerators, industrial sewing and knitting machines, a circular saw, fufu-blending machines, wheelchairs, a laptop, educational support, medication, and therapy – all meticulously chosen to address specific requirements. The program’s success is underscored by the fact that the initial investment has generated a positive ripple effect, demonstrating tangible benefits for the recipients.
The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, underscored the significance of the initiative, stating that the President’s pledge to provide quarterly support to PWDs represents a vital intervention in enabling beneficiaries to achieve economic self-reliance. He emphasized that the program is not merely a gesture of goodwill but a strategic move towards creating sustainable employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
The AMA has made notable advancements in accessibility, including the full operationalization of its elevator and the provision of wheelchair access at its offices, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges can seamlessly navigate the building. Furthermore, the Assembly has recruited a qualified plumber and electrician, individuals with disabilities, to serve as practical employment opportunities alongside the social support component of the program. Mr. Allotey highlighted the importance of treating PWDs with dignity and respect, noting that the initiative aims to empower individuals to take control of their futures.
The Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Alfred Kotey Ashie, commended the AMA’s proactive prioritization of the welfare of PWDs, urging beneficiaries to utilize the provided resources as a foundation for establishing thriving businesses. He stated that the Assembly will be diligently monitoring and conducting follow-up visits to assess the program’s effectiveness and ensure optimal utilization of the resources.
Furthermore, the Ghana Disability Common Fund Management Committee (GDCMC) acknowledged the AMA’s timely disbursement of the funds, enabling the community to participate in valuable skills training programs. These programs included tie-and-dye production and liquid soap making, demonstrating the potential for beneficiaries to translate their training into sustainable income streams. The provision of working tools and equipment is expected to further enhance the beneficiaries’ capabilities and broaden their economic horizons, moving beyond initial training to foster long-term entrepreneurial success.”
