The Seattle startup, Endurance Energy, is making significant strides in renewable energy with a revolutionary approach: tapping into geothermal power from underwater volcanoes. Unlike traditional geothermal plants that rely on surface heat, this venture utilizes the extreme temperatures found deep within the ocean floor, specifically near volcanic vents. The company’s pilot program, centered around a 100-kilowatt geothermal generator dubbed ‘Adélie,’ is currently deployed off the Oregon coast, near an undersea volcano identified as the Juan de Fuca Ridge. This volcano’s depth of approximately 2 miles and its sustained temperatures reaching up to 726 degrees Fahrenheit, makes it a uniquely challenging environment for geothermal extraction.
