The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has undertaken a significant initiative to bolster educational infrastructure within the Kumasi Metropolis, specifically focusing on the reduction of furniture needs and the transition away from traditional wooden furniture. As part of this strategic effort, the Assembly has donated 400 mono metal-recycled plastic desks to four senior high schools: Prince of Peace Senior High School, Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, Kumasi Senior High Technical School (KSTS), and Islamic Senior High School. The donation, presented to the Kumasi Metro Education Directorate by Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, represents a substantial commitment to improving the learning environment for students within the region. The beneficiaries are each receiving 100 desks, a total of 400 desks distributed across the four institutions.

The initiative stems from a broader commitment by the government to prioritize and strengthen education, particularly within the Kumasi Metropolitan Area. Mr. Boadi emphasized that the donation is a crucial component of the Assembly’s overarching goals to enhance educational infrastructure and cultivate a conducive atmosphere for academic success. He stated that the government remains steadfast in its dedication to improving teaching and learning and will continue to support initiatives designed to bolster the education sector. The government’s commitment is underscored by several ongoing projects within the metropolis, including the construction of a 24-seater toilet facility for KSTS and the assembly of hall spaces for Islamic SHS and Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ SHS. The Mayor also disclosed that the Assembly is planning to procure and distribute over 1,000 additional furniture sets to schools before the end of the year, a substantial expansion of the existing furniture stock.

The donation of recycled plastic desks aligns directly with the national policy to gradually phase out the use of wooden furniture in schools, reflecting a move towards sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. The acceptance of recycled plastic desks represents a significant step in this direction, offering a more durable, environmentally friendly alternative compared to traditional wooden furniture. Furthermore, the desks are lauded for their reduced maintenance requirements, lower environmental footprint, and potential to minimize deforestation. The KMA is encouraging alumni associations of second-cycle institutions to provide support by offering modern furniture and other resources to their former schools. Mr. Ofori-Agyeman Boadi highlighted that the relocation to recycled plastic desks is particularly advantageous due to their increased durability, reduced environmental impact, and the necessity of less frequent replacements. He stressed the importance of maintaining the furniture to ensure its longevity, a key consideration for the Assembly. Receiving the desks, representing the planning and statistics unit, Mrs. Judith Mensah-Bamford, expressed appreciation to the KMA for the intervention, noting that the new desks would substantially improve student comfort. She stated that inadequate furniture and other infrastructure challenges continue to affect effective teaching and learning, and the Assembly calls for increased investment in education. Headteachers of the beneficiary schools likewise welcomed the donation, affirming that the new desks would contribute to a more comfortable and productive learning environment. They assured the Assembly that the furniture would be properly maintained to prevent premature damage and reduce the need for frequent replacements. The KMA stated that it will continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to provide the resources necessary to improve the quality of education in the metropolis. Agotime Konor has also expressed his concerns regarding the completion of the District Hospital, and the improved water supply, urging for the swift completion of these vital projects.”

The initiative underscores the Assembly’s commitment to providing students with the necessary tools to succeed. The President has directed that within the next five years, the government should phase out the use of wooden desks in schools, aligning with a broader vision for sustainable education. Mr. Ofori-Agyeman Boadi underscored the benefits of the recycled plastic desks, including their reduced environmental impact and the potential for increased recycling efforts. He appealed for the completion of the district hospital and the improvement of water supply, recognizing the critical importance of these investments in the community’s well-being. He further asserted the importance of a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative. The KMA is committed to ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other partners to address the challenges facing education in the area, aiming to provide a better learning experience for all students.
