The Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, and Western North Regions are currently experiencing a three-day sit-down strike initiated by tanker drivers, reflecting a growing concern over inaccuracies in fuel measuring meters installed at the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) depot in Kumasi. This action, initiated by the Association of Tanker Drivers, represents a significant disruption to the region’s vital petroleum supply chain, raising serious concerns about potential shortages and logistical challenges. The strike began on [Date – Placeholder], and the drivers are demanding immediate investigation and resolution of the issue.

For several months, the association has been raising concerns about discrepancies observed during exercises involving transporters, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), and tanker unions. These exercises, conducted across various regions, have revealed inconsistencies in the measurements of fuel, prompting the drivers to believe that the meters are malfunctioning or improperly calibrated. The Association of Tanker Drivers, led by Dominic Brenya, stated that the situation has resulted in substantial financial losses for drivers, despite the use of modern technologies for monitoring tanker movement and fuel flow. The drivers allege that the system at the offloading point is faulty or calibrated incorrectly.

The strike is rooted in a deeper dissatisfaction with the current operational conditions, particularly concerning loading procedures. According to the drivers, inadequate loading facilities frequently lead to extended delays, leaving drivers stranded for extended periods while awaiting to load their trucks. Furthermore, the inadequate parking space at the depot forces drivers to park their fuel tankers on the shoulders of the road, creating a significant safety risk to other road users. The situation poses a serious danger to other motorists and transport vehicles, particularly given the highly flammable nature of petroleum products.

The association has also voiced strong concerns about the impact of this situation on the distribution of petroleum products. They are demanding that BOST, the NPA, and the government urgently investigate the matter and implement corrective measures. The strike is intended to maintain the three-day duration until these concerns are addressed. Management of BOST Kumasi has declined to comment on the drivers’ specific complaints, further adding to the urgency of the situation. The association has warned that a prolonged industrial action could significantly impact the distribution of petroleum products, potentially leading to shortages at fuel stations and broader disruptions to fuel supply across the region and beyond.

GoldBod secures 30% of the large-scale gold output for strategic reserves, demonstrating a significant role in the region’s economic activity. Residents in the Dome-Kwabenya–Kitase area have expressed significant discontent over deplorable road conditions, prompting them to take to the streets. This escalating situation highlights the critical need for improved infrastructure and logistical solutions to mitigate these challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of all road users.
