Zambia’s political landscape has been dramatically altered following the conclusion of the presidential election, resulting in the arrests of several prominent opposition figures, sparking widespread concerns about the stability of the country. Security forces seized weapons and detained 11 individuals, primarily senior opposition figures, following allegations of a planned insurrection. The government, in a statement released on Friday, stated that the arrests were a direct response to the alleged involvement of these individuals in an attempt to destabilize the nation. The leading opposition candidate, Brian Mundubile, was also found at the scene of a raid in Lusaka, the capital, according to the country’s top civil servant, Patrick Kangwa. Mundubile described the raid as an ‘attempt on his life’ and stated that colleagues were shot during his presence, adding that he was facing a threat to his safety. With results from over half of the constituencies, Mundubile is trailing incumbent Hakainde Hichilema, a significant margin in the polls. The arrests represent a sharp escalation in the political tensions following the election, raising serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process. The authorities have denied any involvement in the arrests, claiming that election day was largely peaceful and orderly, though they did raise concerns about late electoral reforms, media freedom, and the accessibility of the media. Kangwa detailed that the individuals arrested were connected to ‘military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps.’ He asserted that they posed a ‘serious threat to state security’ and possessed ‘high-grade military weapons, ammunition, and other materials intended for use in an armed insurrection.’ The authorities revealed that shots were fired at law enforcement officers during the raid, leading to a fire exchange. Among those apprehended were Patrick Mwansa, the husband of Tasila Lungu, the daughter of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, and a number of other politicians. The suspects are currently held in custody at various police stations across Lusaka. The allegations leveled against Mundubile included reports of military involvement at tallying centers and irregularities involving ballot boxes. He later claimed he was being interrogated by Zambian army officers over two videos he released, alleging he had been assaulted while in custody, which authorities denied. The Tanzanian government vehemently denied any involvement in the arrests, asserting that it had not sent any individuals to interfere with the election. Zambia’s electoral commission briefly suspended the counting and announcement of results on Friday, citing violence against polling staff and theft of marked ballot papers, citing a potential threat to the integrity of the electoral process. The suspension was lifted the same day, stating that the security threat had been contained.
