President John Dramani Mahama has made a significant donation to the Greater Accra Gonjaland Youth Association (GAGYA) to facilitate dignified funeral arrangements for members of the Gonja community in Ghana. The vehicle, a state-of-the-art hearse, was commissioned at the GBC Clubhouse in Accra on Sunday, a ceremony attended by traditional leaders, government officials, religious leaders, and a considerable contingent of Gonja community members. The gesture, a clear demonstration of governmental support, stems from a longstanding request from the association, which has been actively advocating for improved welfare for young people within the region. Chairman of GAGYA, Issahaku John Polly Manful-Wura, expressed profound gratitude to President Mahama for responding to this crucial need, acknowledging the association’s longstanding commitment to the community’s well-being. He emphasized that the donation is an expression of unity and compassion, reflecting a deep desire to ensure the comfort and respect afforded to the deceased and their families during a difficult time. The association’s ambitious plans include acquiring ten motorbikes for young individuals, providing financial support for women, and collaborating with the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), the Ghana EXIM Bank, and the Youth Employment Agency to offer soft loans and Aboboyaa tricycles to beneficiaries. Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, also underscored the importance of unity amongst the Gonja community, urging them to remain steadfast in their support for initiatives designed to enhance the welfare of young people. He revealed that while some young people have already secured employment opportunities, others are still undergoing processing, highlighting the ongoing need for proactive support. On behalf of the members of Parliament from Gonjaland, Sulemana presented a substantial donation of GH¢10,000, complemented by two motorbikes, totaling a significant investment in the association’s operations. Adding further context to the event, 24-hour economy news outlets have reported that retired Fire Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Kofi Eyaboe, has been granted GH¢350,000 bail over alleged involvement in a recruitment scam, further emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and accountability within the region.
