The newly elected KNUST SRC President, Jude Michelle, has articulated a clear and focused agenda for her administration, prioritizing key challenges facing student life at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Arts and Science (KNUST). Her election has been marked by a commitment to addressing crucial issues including affordability of data, escalating hostel expenses, improved transportation options, and enhanced student security. Michelle’s initial address highlighted a multi-faceted approach to tackling these challenges, emphasizing the importance of student access to essential resources.

Specifically, Michelle addressed the critical issue of data affordability, stating her immediate focus would be to bolster student access to internet connectivity. She explained that affordable data bundles are vital for academic success, and she intends to work with the university to increase the availability of these resources for students. The student body, she acknowledged, increasingly relies on internet for learning, making data a significant factor in the student experience. She described the current situation as problematic, stating that students frequently struggle to afford the necessary data packages to effectively engage with their studies.

Another significant concern is the rising cost of hostel accommodation. Michelle questioned the discrepancy between academic fees and the prices charged by private hostels, highlighting a disparity that is causing considerable financial strain for students. She stated that, in some instances, students are forced to choose between their school fees and the cost of a private hostel, a situation she believes requires urgent attention.

Moving beyond data, Michelle addressed the growing problem of transportation. She acknowledged the university’s efforts to improve mobility, particularly through the addition of new buses, but noted that the number of available buses relative to the student population remains insufficient. She emphasized that her administration will actively engage key stakeholders and develop policies aimed at optimizing transportation logistics. She stated that her eight-month tenure will be measured not by empty promises, but by tangible improvements that directly benefit students.

Security is another paramount concern, and Michelle expressed her commitment to strengthening campus security. She noted the Ashanti Regional Minister’s previous emphasis on this issue and expressed confidence that ongoing engagement with relevant stakeholders would contribute to enhanced safety measures. She stated that the university has already begun to develop policies designed to bolster security, and her administration intends to actively monitor student safety throughout the year.

Furthermore, Michelle outlined plans for a comprehensive engagement with stakeholders. She stated that her administration will work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including student representatives, faculty, and administrators, to address the identified challenges. She explained that the university’s efforts will involve a thorough assessment of the existing situation and the implementation of targeted strategies to improve the student experience. Michelle emphasized that her goal is to create a positive change within the student community, ensuring that her administration’s focus is centered on the well-being and success of her students.

The university’s commitment to improving student facilities is acknowledged, with the addition of new buses being a significant step. However, Michelle underscored that these improvements should be viewed in the context of a broader strategy aimed at addressing the root causes of the challenges faced by students. She affirmed that her administration will prioritize student well-being and actively seek ways to enhance the overall student experience, acknowledging that her success will be measured by the tangible improvements experienced by students throughout her eight-month tenure.
