The Kennedy Center board convened on Thursday to vote on a significant restructuring of the iconic arts center, resulting in a partial closure for up to two years and the addition of President Donald J. Trump’s name to the building’s facade. This decision follows a May court order requiring the board to commemorate President John F. Kennedy through a memorial dedicated to him, and to re-incorporate the building’s physical location to ‘President Donald J. Trump Plaza.’

The vote, which saw 20 to 3 members of the board – including former Council members Joyce Beatty, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and Representative Rick Larsen – oppose the change, while 3 members, including ex-officio members from Congress, voted in favor. The decision, spearheaded by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, proposes renaming the building to ‘The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump’ and relocating the building’s physical location to ‘President Donald J. Trump Plaza.’

Following the vote, Judge Christopher Cooper, who issued the May court order halting the closure, stipulated that the board must present a financial plan to justify the decision. The plan’s aim is to allow for the continued operation of the center’s smaller addition, the Reach, which will remain open for events, including performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, the center’s primary tenant. The orchestra’s history stretches back since the early 1970s, when it was conceived by Jacqueline Kennedy as a memorial to her husband, John F. Kennedy.

Since the early 1970s, the Center has experienced a dramatic rise in stature, but its future is now uncertain due to the Kennedy Center’s restructuring under Trump’s leadership. The building’s Concert Hall, a central feature, is slated for temporary removal, prompting a search for alternative venues in the area. The board has expressed concerns about the center’s future, anticipating a potential reshaping of the arts institution within the Washington, D.C., landscape. The decision has sparked controversy among the administration’s critics and members of the Kennedy family, with former Rep. Joseph Kennedy III stating, “The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so.”

Cooper’s order temporarily halted construction work and ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the building, which was removed in June.

The board intends to ultimately close the center ‘should it come to this decision anew after independently balancing its multiple obligations to the Center in a prudent fashion.’ The decision to close and rebrand the center has ignited considerable outrage within the administration’s ranks, as well as among members of the Kennedy family. The Kennedy Center’s future has been in limbo for months, marked by Trump’s efforts to reshape the iconic art institution.”

The decision represents a significant shift in the center’s governance, reflecting Trump’s desire to exert control over the institution’s identity and legacy. The board’s actions are part of a broader effort to modernize the center’s operations and address concerns about its long-term financial stability, as the Concert Hall’s availability impacts its ability to continue performing.
