Israel has initiated a massive, coordinated effort to remove millions of tonnes of rubble from the Gaza Strip, a move that has ignited significant international concern and sparked intense debate regarding its potential implications. The Israeli military, in conjunction with its civilian counterpart, the Israeli Defense Forces, has embarked on a systematic reshaping of the urban landscape, a process largely attributed to a staggering human toll, with at least 73,387 Palestinians – predominantly children and women – tragically killed since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023. This operation, occurring amidst a significant amount of debris, represents a calculated attempt to conceal evidence of the genocide, a claim made by human rights groups and the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. The report, ‘Gaza Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment,’ estimates approximately 68 million tonnes of rubble across the enclave, with 10 million tonnes already removed, crushed, and moved from their original sites within areas under Israeli military control, encompassing roughly two-thirds of the Gaza Strip. Approximately 400 heavy excavation and crushing machinery are actively working to demolish remaining structures, a task driven by the military’s strategic goal of obliterating evidence and concealing the crime scene. The debris is being loaded onto nearly 100 Israeli trucks daily, which are leaving the Gaza Strip for undisclosed locations within Israel and the occupied West Bank. Budour Hassan, a researcher at Amnesty International, highlighted this as a calculated attempt to destroy evidence of crimes committed by Israel during the war. She stated, ‘The bulldozing is an integral part of all attempts to destroy the lands in Gaza City and in the Gaza Strip in general.’ The displacement of rubble, fragmenting structures, and moving it into the Green Line, is intended to strip Palestinians of their physical markers of ownership and deepen ethnic cleansing, a strategy intended to re-establish Israeli settlements in Gaza. The massive removal of rubble could serve a distinct military and colonial purpose. Euro-Med Monitor reported that the large-scale crushing and removal of rubble destroys land boundaries, house foundations, and street networks, stripping Palestinians of the physical markers of ownership and deepening ethnic cleansing in Gaza. This strategy of urban engineering aims to permanently alter the ecosystem of the enclave by preventing the return of Palestinians to their homes and making the destroyed areas in Gaza unliveable or unbuildable, as stated by Hanna, Director of the NGO Network in the Gaza Strip. The removal of ruins also means that the bodies of missing people, estimated by Gaza’s civil defense in July 2026 to number about 8,500, could be gone forever. The mass removal of rubble risks crushing or scattering these remains, severely infringing on the rights of families to know the fate of their relatives. Abu Asim, a Palestinian citizen whose family members remain buried in the eastern areas of the Gaza Strip, shared his agony, stating, ‘My family’s story is that their body parts were scattered in the streets, and some of them are still to this day under the rubble of the house, and their remains have not been brought out.’ The rescue efforts have been entirely paralyzed in areas seized by the Israeli military. Raed al-Dahshan, the director of civil defense in Gaza, emphasized the impossibility of their mission. He further stated, ‘In the available areas where we move now, things are very difficult and complex. So how about the situation if the matter requires coordination to enter the areas located inside the Yellow Line, which requires special equipment, coordination, and securing… The nature of our work there.’ Even known resting places of the dead have not been spared, Salha said, with historical burial sites included in this campaign of erasure. The magnitude of the operation underscores the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with a significant number of civilians trapped and suffering. The international community has expressed grave concerns, with many calling for an immediate halt to the operation and a commitment to protecting civilians and upholding international humanitarian law. The situation remains incredibly volatile, with the Israeli military continuing to seize territory and control, posing a significant threat to civilians. The long-term consequences of this massive undertaking remain to be fully assessed, yet the implications for the future of Gaza and the region are undeniably significant.
