50 Cent’s life-rights lawsuit draws questions about permanent silence as a judge examines the bargain his ex signed with G-Unit.

50 Cent‘s $1 million fight with Shaniqua Tompkins has a judge questioning whether his book deal bought her silence for life.

Justice Robert Reed asked if G-Unit Books could keep Shaniqua Tompkins’ story shelved and bar her from telling it herself.

His remarks appear in a document AllHipHop.com obtained from their last court date in September, when both sides argued their claims.

G-Unit Books brought the suit in July 2025 after Tompkins shared clips about her life with the rapper, including abuse claims. Tompkins and 50 Cent share a son, Marquise Jackson, and the firm says her posts broke a deal signed in 2007.

Delivering news to inboxes since 1999. We break it. They take it. Get it first, straight from AllHipHop.

The deal gave G-Unit sole rights to her story, name and image, with no end date for its control.

The payment terms split $80,000 into two installments: $40,000 at signing and another $40,000 tied to publication, plus potential royalties.

Tompkins says a lawyer took $5,000 from that first payment, leaving her with $35,000 rather than the full $40,000. G-Unit says the other $40,000 was not due since no book reached print, while she argues the deal should not stand.

Reed asked why the firm could hold her rights for good without printing the book or paying that second sum.

“This is the standard catch and kill routine that typically something is typically done by the National Enquirer or something like that to assist people who don’t want to have their dirty laundry published,” Justice Reed said. “Mr. Jackson never had any reason to publish her memoirs. And only an unsophisticated person would think that an offer based upon a contingent payment upon publication was ever real.”

The National Enquirer’s parent company, led by CEO David Pecker, used that tactic to help Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, paying Karen McDougal $150,000 to bury her account of an alleged affair.

Pecker cooperated with prosecutors to avoid criminal charges, while the company later paid a $187,500 election-law fine.

Justice Reed said the deal looked like a means to keep Tompkins quiet, then questioned how long that could last.

“This is a payment to make sure that her story, her relationship to Mr. Jackson was never told publicly,” he said.

The deal had no clause giving her rights back if G-Unit didn’t put the book out within a set time. The lack of an end date led him to ask if she could ever tell her story on her own.

“So, someone signs a non-disclosure agreement and they are 20 years old, can they at 60 tell their story or is this going to hang over their head the balance of their life?” Justice Reed asked.

G-Unit’s lawyer Lisa Coyle defended the condition on the second payment, saying the firm could choose not to publish.

“This agreement was clear on its face that it was within G-Unit’s discretion whether to publish and there would be no compensation if ultimately it wasn’t published for any reason. That’s something that wasn’t hidden,” Coyle said.

Coyle said 50 Cent might have wished to write a joint book about the years before he rose to fame. She said the word “perpetual” showed that both sides had agreed to terms that would last for life.

She argued that a bad deal did not give the court grounds to let Tompkins walk away from it.

“Its just simply that something of real value was exchanged and it may very well have been a bad deal, it may have been worth more. But that’s not a reason for the Courts to void the contract after the fact,” Coyle said.

Tompkins claims 50 Cent’s late manager Chris Lighty threatened her into signing. She has alleged that 50 Cent first hit her while she was pregnant with their son, then later struck her in front of her daughter.

She said she left because she did not want her daughter to see her stay with a man who hit her. She also accused him of beating her after Marquise told her his father had been with another woman.

In a separate claim about a 2005 film deal, she alleged he dragged her by the hair, pushed her down and choked her at Violator’s offices.

50 Cent’s team denies her abuse claims and says her past sworn claims showed that she had once accepted the deal. G-Unit wants at least $1 million and an order to take those clips down.

Justice Reed reserved his decision on the defenses and counterclaims at the September hearing, saying he would prepare a written ruling.

The two sides return to court on December 15 for the next date in the fight over her life story rights.
