The 2026/27 MTN FA Cup will make Ghanaian football history, with the final set to be played over two legs for the first time in the competition’s history.
The Ghana Football Association has introduced the new format as part of changes to the country’s premier knockout competition, with both finalists set to have the opportunity to host a leg of the final in front of their home supporters.
The first leg of the historic final is scheduled for June 5–7, 2027, while the return fixture will take place between June 12 and 13.
The move represents a major departure from the traditional one-off final and is expected to add a new dimension to the competition’s climax, with the two finalists having 180 minutes to battle for the coveted trophy.
It also gives supporters of both clubs the chance to watch their team contest a final on home soil, potentially creating a bigger atmosphere around the competition and increasing its visibility.
The road to the historic final will begin much earlier, with the preliminary round scheduled for October 23–26, 2026.
The Round of 64 will then take place from November 27–30, followed by the Round of 32 from February 12–15, 2027.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for March 19–22, while the semi-finals will be played between April 23 and 26.
The competition will then reach its historic climax in June, when the finalists face each other over two legs to determine the 2026/27 MTN FA Cup champion.
Nations FC will enter the competition as defending champions after securing the trophy in dramatic fashion last season.
The club defeated Dreams FC 5-4 on penalties after the final ended 1-1 following extra time in the 2025/26 campaign.
With the introduction of the two-legged final, the upcoming edition promises to be unlike any previous MTN FA Cup campaign.
The new format could also bring greater tactical intrigue, as finalists will have to manage two separate encounters rather than settle the competition in a single match.
As clubs prepare for the preliminary round, attention will now turn to who can navigate the demanding knockout journey and earn a place in what will be a historic two-legged final in June 2027.
