DAR ES SALAAM: THE Port of Dar es Salaam has climbed 105 places in the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), rising from 360th position in 2024 to 255th, signalling improved efficiency in handling container vessels.
The index, published by the World Bank in collaboration with S&P Global Market Intelligence, measures port performance based on the time container ships spend at ports, including waiting time and the time taken to serve vessels at berths. The improvement comes as global shipping continues to face disruptions affecting the movement of goods and maritime routes.
The World Bank cautions that CPPI results should be viewed within the broader global shipping environment, where changes in shipping routes, weather conditions and disruptions to supply chains can affect vessel turnaround times. Security challenges in the Red Sea have also prompted changes in shipping routes, with implications for shipping flows in the Indian Ocean.
For Tanzania, continued investment in port infrastructure, technology, digital systems and operational procedures will be critical to sustaining the gains and improving vessel and cargo handling efficiency. Faster turnaround times can also strengthen the port’s competitiveness in regional and international trade.
Dar es Salaam port remains a key gateway for regional trade through the Central Corridor, linking Tanzania with landlocked neighbouring countries. Improved vessel-handling efficiency is therefore important in reducing cargo delays, facilitating trade and strengthening the reliability of services for businesses using the corridor.
