New York can claim Hip Hop’s birthplace forever. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Nas are more interested in whether the city can still claim its future. Sitting down near the Queensbridge Houses for a new short documentary, the two discussed what New York gave the genre and what it will take to keep another generation of artists from being priced out of the city that created it.

“We can’t be content with New York City simply being the birthplace of Hip Hop,” Mamdani told Billboard. “We want it to still be its home.” For Mamdani, that means making sure artists who create in the Big Apple can actually afford to live there. He also warned against allowing the city to become so expensive that “art becomes a luxury good,” tying New York’s cultural future directly to who can still build a life there.

Nas approached the question from the other direction, looking back at what New York sounded like when Hip Hop first gave neighborhoods a microphone. “Hip Hop unveils the truth,” he said in the film. “Hip Hop tells you exactly what your city looks like, sounds like, feels like.” He described the music as an outcry from people demanding change while showing the rest of the world what New Yorkers were living through.

The conversation moves quickly past celebrating where Hip Hop began. Mamdani’s larger argument is that history becomes little more than nostalgia if the city that produced the genre becomes inaccessible to the people who can push it forward. New York can fill museums with its Hip Hop past. Keeping the culture alive requires making room for artists who have not made their history yet.

That thinking also sits behind the new Bronx School of Hip Hop, which opened this month with Hip Hop woven into its academic curriculum. The documentary follows Mamdani’s visit to the school and connects its students to the larger question he and Nas are discussing. If New York wants to remain Hip Hop’s home, the next generation has to see a future for itself there.

Nas spoke about people from his own neighborhood who had talent but little showing them another direction. “There’s more to life than just surviving,” he said, placing the responsibility on what young people are given before their options narrow. Mamdani closes on a similar idea, encouraging young New Yorkers “to keep writing, to keep creating” while calling on the city to remain “forever hungry.” Nas agreed simply, “That’s what it’s all about.”

New York does not need anyone to certify its place in Hip Hop history. Mamdani and Nas are asking the harder question of what the city is doing to earn that position going forward.
