EOCO attempted to arrest Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a member of Parliament, on September 23rd, 2026, which drew criticism due to unprofessional methods.
EOCO proactively contacted the Accra High Court’s Speaker, Alban Bagbin, requesting the arrest, a request the EOCO denied. The MP initially insisted on a verbal address and proposed driving himself, which the EOCO officials reportedly disregarded.
The attempted arrest involved a woman EOCO official who approached the MP outside the court. The MP, who was representing a nurse, requested an arrest warrant, which the official refused to provide. A confrontation followed, resulting in the MP driving off to Parliament, which is currently on recess.
EOCO released a statement confirming the attempted arrest, citing lawful duty and delayed completion due to assessment of potential counter-action. Baffour Awuah disputed the involvement, stating he was not the subject of investigation but was simply representing his former law firm. He responded to EOCO’s inquiries via three separate communications to the Clerk of Parliament, demonstrating his commitment to cooperation.
The incident sparked condemnation from the Ghana Bar Association, the Ashanti Regional NPP, and private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, highlighting a potential breach of parliamentary privilege.
